midi sample dump???

before heads start getting bent...i searched and couldn't find a sufficient answer. so if you know of a previous post concerning this, please direct me or just give am explanation.

in what cases would one use midi sample dump? i think i understand what it does from reading the manual, but trying to find out a practical application where i would use it leaves me stumped. anyone ever used it and if so for what?

i use midi dump all the time with my MPC & Motif

it can be used to load up / save the sounds you use to do your sequence with on the MPC

so...i have a proteus 2000 sound module and i want to dump a bass sound and a maracas into my mpc 2000xl. i can do that? will it actually convert the midi data into sound????!!!?? can it do that? i thought midi was just data. also....does it dump the actual notes? ya know....like if i have 3 bass notes in different keys.

that is correct MIDI is Data not Sound / Audio

when it dumps it saves the information / data only

i made a mistake when i said it dumps the sounds, i really meant to say it dumps the information that pertains to the sounds that were used on a particular beat

if you want to load sounds from the Proteus 2000 to MPC you are going to have to sample it first then load it into the MPC

i sample on my computer more than on MPC for eaiser viewing then use MPC editor to assign to pads and make pgms.

ok...great. understand that. i do already sample from my proteus as well as midi, but i don't understand why/when someone would use midi sample dump.....

think of it like this

You making a beat it may look something like this
On 1st machine (MPC) you have on a certain track an certain instrument

AND on the 2nd machine you have it configure to use the same particular instrument

MPC Track 1 Device 1 = piano - PROTEUS / MOTIF - piano
MPC Track 2 Device 2 = guitar - PROTEUS / MOTIF - guitar
MPC Track 3 Device 3 = synth - PROTEUS / MOTIF - synth
MPC Track 4 Device 4 = Kicks - PROTEUS / MOTIF - kicks
MPC Track 5 Device 6 = Snares - PROTEUS / MOTIF - snares


if you DON'T do a MIDI Dump and tried to load back up your beat the next day (or minute) if you don't SAVE THE DATA that refers back to which instruments was on which track it will look more like this when u try to load the beat again


MPC Track 1 Device 1 = piano - PROTEUS / MOTIF - piano
MPC Track 2 Device 2 = guitar - PROTEUS / MOTIF - piano
MPC Track 3 Device 3 = synth - PROTEUS / MOTIF - piano
MPC Track 4 Device 4 = Kicks - PROTEUS / MOTIF - piano
MPC Track 5 Device 6 = Snares - PROTEUS / MOTIF - piano

In the above example the PROTEUS / MOTIF assumes you only want to use the Piano for the above beat. But you had different sounds right?

Thats why you use midi dump. To SAVE the DATA pertaining to which instruments where used on which track.

the bandwith of midi is similar to 56k modem speed. its quiker to load up them there disks other ways.

it takes me about 3 seconds to dump between the MPC / Motif 7

56k speed?

i'm not the "MIDI GURU" but it dosent seem to take too long too me
especially comparing it to 56k speed

not sure how accurate that is

i never use it, its just something i picked up in a forums so it could be BS.

umm no itested it today and it takes roughly 30seconds per stereo drum sound.

can somebody show me how much they know by going step by step on how to do a sample dump lets see who is really king of mpc!

How To Do A MIDI DUMP BETWEEN MPC / MOTIF (or whataver)

NOTE THIS IS MY METHOD, others may have a different way.

1. Create my beat with maybe sequences 1 -30 (dependning on the track maybe more or less)

2. Go to the 99 Sequence (because its unused and far away from my beat i have already sequence in SONG Mode.)

3. Hit Pattern / Mixing / Job on the MOTIF (or whatever machine you got.

4. Then On the Motif hit BULK

5. Now go back to the MPC

6. RECORD (while on the 99 Sequence)

7. On the 4th Mentronome click hit ENTER on the MOTIF

8. It will ask ARE YOU SURE and say YES (Hit Enter)

9. Now you will hear a slight pause in the Mentronome (clicking)
(And if you look on the MOTIF screen while doing the above step you
will see something on the MOTIF screen stating RECEIVING DUMP)

The Dump should now be complete

10. To verify your Dump is complete

11. Go to the MPC hit STOP

This part is tricky because your doing two things at once.

12. On MPC now Press PLAY

13. (And once again if you look at the Motif screen you will notice it flash a message stating receiving MIDI BULK)

Meaning it has SAVE / LOADED back all the data / parameters used in constructing your beat.

* I never seen anyone explain MIDI DUMP online so yall better save this shit.
