Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

hey guys
new to the mpc but been having loads of fun messing around with it (some sounds came prepackaged)
anyways i was wondering where you guys get all your sounds from?
when i get a job ill probably buy some of the sound packs off this site..ive listened to some samples of the samples (^_^) and they are good stuff.
but is there any where i can get some free sounds just to f*ck with for a bit?
ive been downloading wavs of the net trying to put together my own kits but the mpc always spits out some unknown file type or soemthin along those lines.
id delete the files that cause this but there doesnt seem to be a way for me to really distinguish between the wavs.... as in what type of encoding etc. or even if the file is a wav file.... it just calls them all Winamp media files..
anyways you guys got a new member to roam the board daily and hopefully give you guys something to listen to in the coming months.

MPC2k/2kxl like SND, WAV (pcm) 44.1khz 16bit files. Maybe the files you are dowloading are not what your MPC likes. get a wave editor or some other programs that will let you view the actual properties of the sounds you download. You can either dowload the correct format samples or you can convert them to be what you want them to be..

Do a serach on the net for free wav samples (google is a good search engine).. You will find many downloadable sounds and samples..

There are different types of WAV's out there that the MPC wont work with.
You want 44.1 khz 16bit pcm microsoft wav files, they are the ones that the MPC will work with.

Sound Forge is an excellent Editor and works very well. I actually use Sound Forge alot and it is a very important program to me. SF can take many different file types from the net and convert/save them as wav's that your MPC can work with.

I get my sounds from EVERYWHERE. TV, tape, DAT, MiniDisc, CD, Video Tape, DVD, Internet, Sample Packs. Video Games are a very good source for me as well seeing that I am also a hardcore fighting game fanatic..

oh man
i was just taking a break to check the downloads
and check the forum
you dig 2d fighting games are you more into those fancy 3d style stuff like tekken and whatnot
my favorites gotta be guilty gear and street fighter 3 third strike
i was just playing jojo's bizarre adventure...crazy game
another good one is the marvel vs capcom and capcom vs snk series
dont get me started about king of fighters!
but thats an awesome idea...sampling from video game
ive just been waiting for my friend to buy a technic and sample off his records merely for the control you have over the sound...
i really should stop playing so much guilty gear and work with the mpc more... but since i started studying piano ive really begun to enjoy the playing it! somehow need to rig my keyboard to the akai.....
im gonna have to re install soundforge, i know i have it laying around somewhere, i remember after installing it and trying to mess with some stuff its pretty complex program, i got what i needed done but the interface scared me away and i uninstalled it...
you use a iomega zip drive for your akai/pc?
im thinkin about buying 2 of those as soon as i get a job for pc/akai
the floppies are ok for now since i still ned pc upgrades and im no where near experienced enough on the akai to be spending more money at this point... anyways keep rocking the fighting games. they are one of the best parts of life in my opinion. without 2d fighting games i would be a sad little boy ^_^

Every fighting game I have ran across has good samples. I use a
y-adapter split from PS2/XBOX/DREAMCAST going into my PC and video going to my TV. I just let the record go on while I am playing and chop it all up in Sound Forge AUTO_REGION later. Don't be scared of
Sound Forge. It's is one of the best editors for PC IMO. Along with Ultrafunk and WAVES plugins it proves to be a very deep and flexible program. Even without any plugins at all it's still nice.

But for converting audio files I would choose awave over almost anything cause it supports like almost 200 different formats. It does much more than convert also.

so it seems you guys just use the iomega zip for storing your songs and sample off computer/vinyl
that is lookin like the way to go....
no clue what cable i would need to go from soundcard to mpc any u guys know? all i know is its gotta end in 1/4" for the mpc..whats that type o cable called?
an here i was making 1.44 floppies with little wavs on em hehe what a noob

strangely enough, it's called 1/4" cable. Grab a stereo pair rather than individuals, that way it's color coded and easier to track into your mixer, etc.

Depending who you ask, you should get either balanced or unbalanced outs. I stick to unbalanced, it's cheaper and I don't hear any difference, personally.

Zip is the way to go when it comes to 2K(xl). More space than floppies and I've never had trouble writing to zips using MPC Editor either.

Oh, if you haven't checked that out, do so. MPC Editor is a program for dragging and dropping samples onto an MPC-looking Windows interface, to create programs, which you then import to the MPC via a floppy or a zip disk. Good stuff, you can do a 30 day trial I think.

so the 8 outs are pretty much essential eh?
