I Found A 2000XL ... Should I Get It?

Hello all:

I’ve been wanting an MPC for some time now – I just haven’t seen anything that I would rather have for creating drums beats. I’ve been here a few times and recently registered.

I’ve pretty much decided, based on my financial situation, to get an MPC1000 when it comes out. It seems like it will have enough of the features that I want. However, I’ve come across a used MPC2000XL and I’m rethinking what I want to do.

It doesn’t have the optional 8 outs board, and I would doubt if it has the effects board, or any added memory. The owner didn’t know much about it – only has had it for a couple of weeks and is only interested in selling it. From what I remember, it had the zip drive. The owner also has the power cord, owner’s manual, and cd disk, I would assume, of samples.
It appeared to be in good condition – couldn’t really see much in the way of blemishes or scratches.

The owner wants $800 plus tax (8% - about $70 or so more). This appears to be a reasonable deal to me. Is that the case?

I’ve seen discussions and debates going either way – the 2000XL or the 1000 – I don’t think there is a down side in this deal – if the owner sells it before I buy it, I’ll just get a 1000.

This buy would tap me out for quite a while. I wouldn’t be able to afford the 8 outs board or the effects board. I assume that I could get by in the short term – I have a vs1680 with both effects boards – I assume that I would use its effects boards and would bring the 2000XL sequences over 2 outs at a time – laborious, but doable. Does this sound reasonable?

What should I look for in wear and tear on the unit – the jog wheel, etc?

I have no idea what to do in running it thru some tests to make sure there is nothing major wrong with it. This place is a pawn shop, and I have no idea what their return policy might be – I assume that it might be a “take as is” price.

I realize that I could some of this info by searching and intend to do so. I was hoping to get a jump start with some advice. Thanks …

I own a 2000xl and love the thing. But I must be honest, if I didn't own the 2000xl and I was just investing, I'd get the new shiz. You won't go wrong either way but you'll have less headaches with the 1000. I know a lot of people are saying there will be lots of bugs because of some of the stuff that happened with the 4000 but that was a bloated machine. For the cost of the 8 outs and the FX board, and the memory upgrade for the 2000x, you could have bought a 1000 already. It's going to have a VERY similar if not identical sequencer, and you don't have to worry about finding old zip drives and disks and crap like that.


From a 2000xl owner who loves it, get the 1000. Make sure you demand no more than $650-$700 for it though.


On another note, if you are buying a 2000xl from someone like a pawn shop, you might get some little thing that doesn't work right in it but because you are new to the MPC, you might not learn this until a long time from now. If you get the 1000, you are copping a new peice of gear with a warranty. Don't let anyone sway you, get the 1000, it's the right choice for you my boy.

Having to deal with a used, defective unit is very stressfull and expensive so I agree with jus 100% get the MPC 1000.
Now that the new, kinda strange lookin, blue line of mpc's are coming out the old grey mpc 2000xl are selling for cheaper mainly on e-bay (go figure).

Yeah, you will be better off with the new equipment than haveing to deal with or wonder about what's wrong with the used one or possibly having to get it repaired later on. Get the new joint and have now worries along with a good warranty. Leave the 2kxl where it is. You can save up a little more money since the 1k won't be out for just yet.

Waiting will allow me to save up a little more so that I can get extra memory and the storage card ...

Yeah, you can pre-order now for about $879. If you wait, you can probably get it even cheaper.

yeh i found an mpc2000xl in some bushes near the creak. it was covered in moss and the pads were made out of stone. i think it was an ancient akai atifakt. now i can juice some rock solid beats!!!!!!

Last time I found an MPC, it was in the woods. I took it home but a family of hamster had eaten everything in it and made it their home. Now, at least I got hamsters.

You'll need to put down that pipe.
