external scsi hard drive problem

i need some help getting my HD working with my MPC...the MPC is recognizing the HD uner the "Vendor" and "product" also list partion sizes.
when i go to format the drive i get this error message:

error at 0000:D29C

i have done a some search on the forums to see if anyone had similar problems. but had no luck..if anyone can give me some help with this id appreciate it..thanks in advance

What was in that auction is a "yeah what ever" SCSI I/II style drive in an "APS" branded case.

The said drive you mentioned is missing a passive terminator.

The "APS" branded unit enclosure has a "Termination Switch" present.

If you dont have a passive terminator present or the termination switch on the "APS" enclosure set in an "on" position then your MPC ( 2000 ? 2000XL ? ) could crash into its debugger software routine and throw such an exception message as the one you mentioned above.

Have you tried passive terminating or enabling the termination switch on the "APS" drive

Make certain to also select a SCSI ID that is "not" in conflict with the unit number that your MPC uses.

my apologies i forgot to include what i have tried in my first message...i have tried turning on the digital termination swith on the aps case...also i have tried putting on the passive terminator on the backside of the unused scsi socket (tried it on with the digital termination on and off)...

my problem is not with the mpc regonizing the drive its getting it to function with the mpc (load, save, format etc...)

if anyone else has any other suggestions please reply...thanks

Have you lifted the lid on the APS enclosure ?

If so ...

Is the SCSI drive within that encosure a:

Real SCSI I/II hard disk drive ?

Or ...

An IDE hard disk drive connected to a SCSI<>IDE Bridge/Convertor.

If the drive within this APS enclosure is a real SCSI I/II hard disk type then it may have it's parity mode selected incorrectly.

Check said hard disk drive's jumper settings and change if necessary or possible.

If the drive within the APS enclosure is an IDE hard disk drive connected to a SCSI<>IDE Bridge/Convertor then said convertor may be incompatible.

Which OS are you running in the F-ROM of your MPC ?

Consider also that unless you can verify the function of this APS branded enclosure and hard disk on another device ... there may be a possibility that said package is faulty.

i have checked the drive inside the aps case...it is a scsi hard drive (quantum xp34300)..i know little about jumper settings so i dont know if the "parity mode " is selected correctly, can you explain real quick what it should be set to..at the moment it set on the "spin up" jumper. here is a link to a diagram of the hd jumper settings: http://www.alyon.org/InfosTechniques/in ... 34300.html

oh yeah im running 1.14 OS on the MPC..

Good jumper and drive info at that link...

Doesn't seem to have a "PARITY" toggle so no need to worry about this setting.

A jumper on "SPIN UP" is fine.

Make certain that the "WRITE PROTECT" jumper is not set.

Maybe wire up the "FAULT" lines for monitoring if they are not connected already and see if the drive throws the fault indicator.

Other things to try...

A different SCSI cable ?

Trying the drive on a SCSI or PC equipped MAC ?

All I can think of right now.

Well, this might help.

I also have a SCSI hard disk and a Zip drive in an external case like yours.
I've set the SCSI id with the jumpers on both item.
The thing I've noticed is, the only way for both device to "recongnize" their own SCSI id, it to have it assigned by Windows ( it only works with 2000 ! No 98, no XP !).

Notice that you have 2 scsi "in-out" on the back of your external case.
I've connected one to my PC and the other to the MPC.
So, I first boot the external case.
Second, I boot my PC. This way, Windows will "assign" to each device ( HD and Zip ) the SCSI id previously set by the jumpers.
Third, I boot my MPC.
This way, my MPC use the SCSI id send by Windows.

I've done it for YEARS and don't have any problems.

The only wack thing is even if the SCSI id is set for both device ( HD and Zip ) with jumpers, the MPC doesn't recongnize both device if I haven't boot my PC. So, I absolutly need my PC to use my MPC. I DON'T KNOW WHY, but that's the way it is !!! But like I said, it took me some time to figure this sh*t up, but my setup is working for YEARS and it works alright. I also don't mind having to boot my PC cause I use Sound Forge alot.
