I wouldn't exactly call MPC 2000XLs ol skool..its been around for only 6 years 
But I would never move from an MPC 2000XL to an MPC 1000. The USB function of the MPC 1000 is not all that great. It only transfers samples from the PC to the MPC 1000s flash card. You still have to load the samples into the MPCs RAM.
For the most part, I never use a PC to edit samples when I use the MPC 2000XL. I do most of the editing on the XL. The few times that I did use the computer to edit samples, I saved these files to a floppy or my USB zip drive. Than I moved the floppy or zip disk to my MPC 2000XL to load the samples.
To exchange zip disks between the MPC 2000XL and your PC, you will need a program such as MPC editor. This program will format zip disks so they both the MPC 2000XL and PC can read them. However, formatting using this program reduces the storage capacity of the zip disks by more than 50%. I have tried this method recently and don't know if this function has improved.
