i want to know if and how you can use the SMPTE code to trigger video samples. I have seen Dj Shadow do this in a live performance and wanted to know wether it requires any external hardware, or if you could run it through a computer download. i'm really interested to know cos i can't find anything on the internet about it. peace

I'm not sure about doing it with a MPC, but you might want to look into a piece of software called "VJamm" which was developed by the guys in Coldcut. In that program, a sample of video is associated with a sample of audio, so when you hit a key - you hear/see both samples.
Search for it on the web. As I remember, it was pretty cheap when it came out.

Check out the Coldcut videos for "Natural Rhythm" and "Timber" to get an idea of what you can do with it.

SMPTE is not used to `trigger` anything but is used to syncronize two different units. Video production uses a lot of SMPTE (the MP in SMPTE does stand for Motion Picture).

SMPTE has nothing to do with interactive VJ'ing at all. leave that rubbish for the DAT and miniDV fakers.

its all about midi and your rig.

you use the extra midi out or set midi channels to trigger a VJ program. we use ARKAOS, although obviously VJAMM is awesome (written by Coldcut and used by Hexstatic among others... typical Ninja Tune genius)

it goes like this... MPC is midi master for our rig, a bank of midi triggers for the VJ stuff goes out midi out 2 and into laptop. laptop is running Arkaos and those midi notes trigger pre-defined visuals and effects, as well as handling a live visual feed from a digital camera which it can also effect/blend/whatever.

also we are free to trigger stuff on the fly with another midi controller, as the MPC has midi thru (soft).

its a lot of work getting your visuals up and running as part of your set, but thats where its at these days. the bar is raised and looping IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT for an hour just wont cut it anymore :P

Thanks heaps for that. i'll check out the programs and maybe make a purchase. i know its a shitload of work to get all the samples geared and synched but it would be pretty cool to be doing something different. peace
