Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

CUTTING LOOPS

If you don’t have an xl you have to do by hand. Here is a quick and dirty way of doing it:

Warning: this method wont work well with all drum loops and takes time…

1 get a calculator

2. get the loop you want to chop

3. press trim (5 on the key pad) the trim mode screen appears

4. make sure start (st) is at zero. look over to end. there should be a five or six digit number here (depending on the bpm of the loop).

5. take this number and divide it by 16. for example: if the number is 119624 you divide it by 16 to get 7476.5. round up to 7476.

6. hit Zone edit (f3) toggle over to end and type in the number you got from the previous calculation. so in my case id type 7476. press enter. notice how the beginning of the loop is now highlighted? good.

7. now press the open window button. press the down arrow so you get to the line marked "Zone Length:" Turn the data wheel clockwise, so that instead of reading "VARI" it reads "FIX." press close

8. now press "edit" (F5). a window will pop up that says "zone->new sample" go down to the line that says new name. here it will be the name of your sample with a "z" on the end. move the cursor over to the z and replace the "z" with an "A" hit enter. now hit do it.

9. it will now pop you back to the zone edit screen. dont panic! everything is fine. go to start line and now type in the number from your previous calculation. hit enter. so in my case I would type 7476 in the start field, not the end field like i did before.

10. see? the highlighted bit moved. that cause you "FIXed" the zone length. now go back and do the same thing you did at step 8, except this time replace the "z" with a "B." remember to press enter.

11. now go to the start (st) line. this time you want to replace the st with the number in the end: field. so in my case, i'll replace 7476 with 14952.

12. from here you do step eight again, except this time replacing the z with a "C" etc. you are going to do this 13 more times. Yeah it takes a long time. yeah it sucks. now you see why cats will drop 150 on a program like recylce (that does all this and much better in seconds).

13. when you are all done you will have 16 samples, all with the name of you original sample plus a letter on the end (A, B...O,P). now assign each of these samples to the 16 pads of A1 in order so that A1 has the A sample, A2 has the B sample, etc.

14. in the program sub-menu set the attack and decay time for each sample to "5." this is so they dont "CLICK."

15. hit main screen. hit f1 (step). hit open window. it'll say "auto step increment: no" turn the data wheel so it says "yes." hit close (f5).

16. hit the "full level" button. now, one pad at a time, hit all 16 pads in order. each time you hit a pad the MPC should move forward by one step (1/16). if you hit all the pads in order twice it should be two bars.

17. hit main screen. press play. there is your loop. adjust the bpm so it sounds right.

REMEMBER : you are in good company. Lots of producers started off having to do things “the hard way.”

nice demonstration,Mr DESCARTES, but what's the interest of doing this? Is it usefull to change the tempo of the loop or what else...Can you tell me please?

u could also export an .akp with a .mid file from recycle into mpc editor.
loading the .pgm and .seq . . hit play!
bang done.
