Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By DNoble Mon Jul 24, 2006 3:49 pm
I searched hard and didnt see this topic anywhere so I guess I will post it.

I am trying to get my expernal card reader to work and I was updating my OS to see if that would fix my problem. I was using a floppy with v1.20 and it just kept saying that it was loading the OS for hours. I powered my MPC 2000XL down and back up a few times and it gives me the same message. I erased the floppy in my PC and then downloaded and copied the OS on it again and now I get the message:
MPC2000XL BOOT ROM V1.01!

and it alternates with:
Insert MPC2000XL Disk!

Anyone else seen this or have any suggestions? I am stuck with an out of commission MPC!

Thanks,

D

what is the os file named as on your floppy? did you try updating it with scsi disconnected? did you first format the floppy in the mpc.. then put in computer and put os .bin file on it and then try loading new os into mpc? mayby try another floppy? what os do you have installed now?

I think I had a simillar problem. It's pretty obscure but check this out:

I bought a new card reader etc. for my BLUE MPC. It had the old OS in it(Which does NOT read anything formatted in a PC).

I had a new SD card, and it worked, but I decided for some reason to DELETE the files on the card IN MY COMPUTER and start fresh BEFORE I updated the OS.

What happened is my card would not work in my MPC! Just in the computer.

So, if you don't follow so far, what happened is the card worked. Then I formatted/ deleted the card in the computer. Because windows formatting does not work in an old MPC OS, I could not update the MPC OS to the OS that does accept PC files!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I took another card I had from my digital camera, put it in my computer, downloaded the newest OS from Akai, put it in the MPC, loaded the OS. Card reader works. MPC works. Computer works.

P.S.-

Updating your OS takes about 4 seconds by the way-so don't sit there more than a minute.

1.20 is NOT for floppy.

Again, 1.20 is NOT for floppy.

1.14 is fine for floppy drives.
1.14c adresses some zip issues with zip drives.
1.20 is for addressing larger cards in card readers.

All of this has been stated in the addendums of each os update.

If you have a floppy you should stick with 1.14.

I have a cf drive and my 2 x cards are 512mb each. I have 1.14. It's fine.

Why do people keep updating and not KNOWING what the update is for?

AARRRRGGGGHHHHH...

I just installed the card reader (along with the 1.20 update) and I also get the 'Insert MPC2000XL disc' message when I turn the MP on.

At the moment, I've only got one card which I've been using in my digital camera. If I put it in the MP to test (really, I just want to see something other than the 'Insert...' screen), will it automatically format the card?

At this point, I just want to make sure the MP and card reader are getting along- that's all.
