I don't have mine in front of me but I'm pretty sure there are some settings to change it's sensitivity. Maybe that's it? Did it work before?

i recently learned how to really use this button. i get the tempo right 85% of the time now in one try! :D

i dont tap while the beat is playing. i just hit one of the pads with a sample on it and tap to the beat of the sample. you really only need to tap the button like twice to get the tempo. not sure why yours isnt working. maybe cause the beat is playing while you do it?

not sure man.

As others have said, you can set how many taps it will average over to compute the tapped tempo. That's one thing. Another thing I've found is that it works better if I 'click' the tempo rather than 'tap' it. What I mean by that is, I don't lift my finger off the button while I click out the tempo. This feels like it gives me more control over when the button gets triggered, at least. (this is on a 1K too, the same technique may not help on the XL)

Works the same way, that's what I used to do.
