Reliability/Stability

Hey there guys,

I'm a MPC 1k user, and I'm really fed up with the unreliability of the 1k. I have lost a lot of work recentlly and I am pretty scared to use it live.

I'm looking at taking it back to the store and getting a 2000xl instead.

I'm wondering if anyone can comment on the reliability of the 2000xl?

Is it a stable workhorse? Has anyone had the dreaded "directory error" that plagues the 1k.

Any help/comments would be much appreciated.

the 2kxl will crash occasionally, but that just gets you in the habit of saving frequently and often...I've had mine since 00 and the only thing that doesn't work now is the NV slider and that came about when I installed the card reader, so I must have hit it agaisnt something to knock it out of alignment or whatever...If you don't use your computer often, I don't see why a 2k wouldn't be good for you...

Before i had my 2KXL i used my friends 1K for about 6 monthes and honestly never really got into it. I just didnt get the vibe i thought i would from an mpc with the 1000 so i picked up a 2000XL for myself and let me tell you it was the best decision ive made related to music equipment. The 2000XL is a beautiful machine and very well built. I havent heard to many complaints about it from people on the boards and i dont think theres really any common errors. Just make sure if your picking up second hand that you test it out and make sure the fuctions all are working and i think you should be fine for it to last you for along time aslong as you dont trash your stuff.

Anways i deifnatly say pick up a 2000XL, you wont regret it man.

Oh yea grab yourself a card reader to toss in there to, best upgrade other then the 8 outs IMHO.

ive only ever crashed mine when i didnt enable the midi filter and sequence alot of extra garbage into a large sequence i was working on, it was only when i went into step edit that i saw it littered with sysex and other mumbo jumbo, then it froze up, ive crashed about 3 times in my mpc since ive had it ( 4 years). ive had more car accidents than that. just pick it up and feel it, solid, much like the Os.

It's solid as a rock.

Remember 2kxl, not 2k, cause later on you'll be asking how to do the cf thing so just save youself the headache and get 2kxl.

my xl crashes every now and then, only once during the playing of a sequence (in about 4 years), but almost always when it does crash (infrequently) its when I'm editing a high-hat, I have this trick I do to make it sound more like muffled and brush like but when I do that now and then with the wrong hat it gives me all the numbers and weird stuff on the screen then freezes up and i have to shut if off.

I'd say it is solid, but it's crashed on me enough times for me to be a little leary if i was to take it out live, although i haven't yet.



anyone else had this problem with the xl crashing when doing certain types of editing of drum sounds in a program like changing attack and decay?

I loved my XL MCD, that thing was great.

Over the years I've had a few crashes, and occasionally get a glitch where it freezes, but then sometimes unfreezes after a few minutes (odd). It really is pretty rare, but we all learn to save often after one loss. I lose stuff more often from power spikes than MPC crashes anyway. Every time this always happens during editing. Often seems to happen when moving around real fast, but no set formula. Fortunately I have never seen this happen while a sequence is playing, so I trust it in a live situation.

For those that have seen some crashes... do you ever get it where it just starts randomly spewing out random samples at random intervals? It is sometimes (oddly) artisticly musical (in an aphex twin sort of way) and I wish I had it setup to record.
