hooking up a roland 303 to mpc 2000xl

Hello

I'm trying to record/overdub on the mpc what I play on the 303.

When I connect the two together - the pads play sounds from the 303 but I want to play the sounds on the 303 and sequence on the mpc.

Where am I going wrong? When I hit the pads I can see a black square on the MIDI output monitor but nothing appears on the MIDI input monitor when I play the keys on the 303?

How did connect 'em together? And while im in the questioning mood; what 303 are you talking about ? MC , SP , TB ?

it's the MC-303 and they're connected with 5 pin DIN MIDI cables.
