card reader installation

i finally decided to cop a card reader for my xl...
now i know there are plenty threads on this
but i haven't really found a clear answer to my question yet...

i know that this card reader works fine with the xl
and this is a nice guide for the installation

now i'm still a little confused...

can i buy ANY 3.5" card reader and it will work with my mpc
or would you recommend to buy a reader thats known to be compatible?
(cuz i seen some thats half the price of that eBay one)

plus is it right, that when i already have an internal zip drive
i dont need any other cables, power suppliers or whatever?

I don't have the zip installed in my xl, I do know I must have and ide cable and get a pc power connector from somewhere. My question is, when i do the switch, is it absolutely necessary that I solder the wires? I was thinking I could simply twist the wires together and keep them tight with some electrical tape.....Please let me know if this would be ok, I can't take not being able to save anything

you dont have to solder them if you dont want to.

i wouldnt recommend tapeing them tho. i would twist them together nice and tight, then use shrink tubing on them.

you slip the shrink tubing over on of the wires, then twist them together, then slip the shrink tubing over the part twisted together. then you just have to heat the shrink tubing togther. if the wiring is out of the mpc, you can do it with a lighter, you dont have to heat it long. you will see it shrink tight after just a few seconds.

you can buy the shrink tubeing from any auto parts store. i use it when building wireing harnesses for street and track cars at my freind shop, im the wiring and turbo guy hahaha.

im suggesting this because if you dont know how to solder, its a pain in the ass to learn when you wanna do it real quickly, shrink tubing makes it really easy. i still solder the wireing together, and use shrink tubing to keep water and shit off the joints.

another question concerning OS updates...

yesterday i made my first update and installed OS 1.20.

now i just noticed that version 1.20 is MCD only...
i do not yet have a card reader but will install one in the next few days
so i guess (hope) thats ok...

i have no idea what OS i was running before...
does just installing the newest versions do the job
or are previous updates needed to fix older bugs?
