Instrument Changing - noob question

I know that in the MPC 4000, you can switch instruments on the fly while a sequence is playing to see how different sounds effect the mix.

I always figured that the 2000xl cant do this (never bothered to look) but i just read an interview with Scott Storch where he mentions the following:
“My main drum programming comes from the MPC3000 and 2000 side by side,” Storch says. “I think the 3000 is the best sounding. But the MPC2000 is the most user-friendly. You can change the instrument that corresponds with [the MIDI channel] without having to stop the record. That's important for me while I'm creating.”

It seems like hemight be talking bout the 2000xl, can anyone elaborate?

The 2000 or 2000xl both can do it.I think what he is talking about is you can record a sequence with an insturment on midi channel one,then if you have something on midi channel two just change the track that you have recorded from midi channel one to two, it will play what you recorded with channel two's insturment. Hope it helps. Or what people do is record a midi pattern from a sound module on to midi(1) and then just change the sound on the sound module while the loop is playing to hear the difference.

I think your confused. By setting up a multi-timbral keyboard/module to except program changes, you could, from the mpc (correct me if im wrong, all mpc's or even any sequencer that offers this function) cycle through sounds corresponding to the midi channel you have selected. You are limited to the 128 programs though, of course, this is in regards to controling your multi device from a 2000xl.

So in other words, yes the mpc 2000xl can do that.

If I've laid down a drum track, and say that I wanna substitute a different kick drum under the current kick while the sequence is playing. And if i dont like the new kick drum, then switch back to the old one with ease.

Can the 2000 do this?

As long as you've recorded the kick data independently. Meaning that channel 1, for example, is just the kick. It'd be just a matter of changing the sound, if the sounds loaded in the mp.

Both Mike Dugan and Showbot are right, you can either change the midi channel on the mpc or change the instrument on the midi device.

I found using the transpose key useful also as I have a mo-phatt and for example midi channel 1 would be Kicks so if I didn't like the kick I recorded I could use the transpose key to scroll through other available kicks on that particular midi channel!!

Not sure if it's possible whilst a beat is playin (as I'm at work) but if you were using kicks on a drum program on your mpc, you can go to programs and change the note number to select a different sound to replace the sound you've recorded, if that makes sense?!
