Tracking to Pro Tools (read the forums, specific question)

I had no problem at all tracking my first couple beats into Pro Tools, I read the manuals and figured it out. I always use Last Used settings and never had to worry about it since I configured it. Today I opened up Pro Tools to track a beat in, and it wouldn't synch. I even opened up old Pro Tools sessions and erased the audio from the tracks and it didn't work. I've been **** around with this for 7 hours straight, so any help would be much appreciated. Here is my setup:


Pro Tools 7.1 via Digi 002 on Mac OSX (non intel chip)

MPC 2000XL Midi IN 1 to Midi OUT 1 of Digi 002
MPC 2000XL Midi OUT 1 to Midi IN 1 of Digi 002

In the MPC it's set to Synch In (In: 1) - MTC - Frame Rate 25 - MMC ON
and also Synch Out (Out: A) - MTC - Frame Rate 25 - MMC ON

Inside Pro Tools:
-Pro Tools is set to Master in the Transport window

-Setup ---> Midi ---> Midi Studio I have the MPC 2000XL midi'd up to the Digi 002 through Midi Out 1 (for both) and Midi In 1 (for both) using Audio Midi Setup.

-Setup ---> Session ---> Time Code Settings ---> MTC to Port Enabled with MPC 2000XL selected underneath.

Oddly enough, when I go to Set Up - MIDI - Midi Beat Clock there are no devices I can enable Midi Clock for, even though in my Audio Midi Setup I have the MPC 2000XL selected as capable for Midi Beat Clock.

I set up the tracks in Pro Tools that I wanted to track in, with the correct audio connections etc. (I can hear them play through my speakers when not recording and just pressing play not synched through MPC). I record enabled all the tracks, and when I press play in Pro Tools, it doesn't start the MPC. I have no clue what is not working, do you have any ideas?

sounds like it to me anyways. everything is set the same as mine as far as i can remember. and if it worked before, and not now and nothing changed, its probably a bad connection.

try unplugging all the cables, and replugging them again. try and swap your midi cables with known good ones from a friend or something.

Thanks for the reply, I tried unplugging the cables and plugging them back in, but to no avail. The midi in light flashes on the digi 002 for both cables when I change it to midi clock on the MPC, so I assumed that meant they work? The midi out lights on the digi 002 don't flash though. I'm going to buy new midi cables and see if it works.

I never posted here before but I came across your problem with the midi connection and I had issues with this myself, the way I finally figuered it out was try going into protools and find midi beat clock, I think its under operations in the menu your going to see boxes make sure that they are checked, it will say something like enable midi to.... and check all the boxes, hope that helps it helped me, good luck. let me know how it turned out.

I bought new MIDI cables and to no avail, it still does not work. Xplizit, thanks for the advice, but since I am using Midi Time Code instead of Midi Beat Clock it shouldn't make a difference. On top of that, when I go into Midi Beat Clock, no devices show up. Does anybody have any advice?

From my experience I've noticed that PT 7.x better syncs with the MPC via Midi Clock.

Try that way and let us know.

I use MTC to sync the MPC to PT. Make sure to select the same frame rate in PT and the MPC. Set the tempo in PT to the same tempo as the sequence in the MPC. MPC midi out> midi device in> Select the midi out in the MPC sync screen> select the midi device in PT> click on the "wait for midi" button in the transport bar in PT> Arm the track in PT> Click on the record buton on the transport bar> Push play on the MPC, PT should start recording in sync with the MPC.

I think I had the same issues on my setup (6.4le).... this seemed to get me over it, but I still have issues some days. I think it is all about the "wait for midi note" in the transport window. I seem to have some issues with the first bar being synced up where it should be, but with a chop (at the start) and a drag (to bar 1) you should be all in time.

I have a 8x8 USB MIDI patchbay on the way this week, this should help with the latency I have on bar 1 missing.

Hey, I reinstalled Mac OSX a while ago and PT and it worked perfectly, me doing everything the same. I think some setting must've been enacted preventing it from working, and i was just completely unaware of what that setting even was. Thanks for the help though.
