Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By tremayne Thu Aug 09, 2007 3:19 am
can anybody post a step by step of recording q-link movements to the mpc 2000xl from the akai z4, specifically record pan sweeps. i've been tryin' to do this forever and i'm not sure if the problem is the mpc settings or the z4 but i'm unable to figure it out. I can hear the z4 pan when i move the fader but when i try and record it to the sequence as i would an internal mpc sound, the q-link movements are not recorded. any help settings recomendations, or a previous thread would be greatly appreciated.

im no expert and im not exactly sure how the q link are regularly controlled but i would assume the mpc wouldnt suppor that unless you could some how assign the q links to a midi cc and set the mpc to record and transmit the midi cc changes...ive contemplated tryin out my mpc 2000 with a z series sampler.... how do you like it ?

that's a bummer. as far as liking it, i love it. Plus they're goin' for cheap. i actually got mine for $250 off ebay with a 60 gb hd and 256 mb.

sorry to bump up such an old post but i've still had no luck with this. is there anyone else who uses a similar set-up or knows how to control midi movents to the mpc 200xl sequencer? The main thing i wanna do this for is pan sweeps and some unique filter and pitch effects. i'm thinkin' the problem is a setting in the mpc because like i said earlier i can hear the movements in real time but when i play the recorded sequence back the movements aren't recorded. if there is a previous thread that exist and someone can point me to it i'd greatly appreciate it. i've been searching this site and the other akai site that actually has a z4/z8 forum and nobody is able to help me out. thanks in advance.

I hate to ask the obvious but, do you have Midi cables connected to and from the Z4 to the MPC?

yep, got one goin' out of the z4 to the mpc, and one going in to the z4 and out of the mpc. i can record & playback the z4 samples on the mpc sequencer with no problems, it's just the actual q-link movements i can't record. and again i can hear the q link movements in real time but when i play the sequence back, the movements aren't recorded.

Page 77 in the z4/8 manual.

You just need to assign your qlinks to midi CCs. That should then send the CC messages to the MPC for recording and vice versa. Very usefull feature.

Set the MIDI recording track (the MPC) and the Z4 to the same channel. then record.

BTW, I don't have a 2000XL or Z4. I can't actually test that out but, it should work.

sounds like the z4, isnt sending the q link data onto the midi output, but just internally. try using midi ox (midi/sysex tool), on the output of the z4 and see if u get any activity when u move the qlink. there should be an option in there to choose the qlink assignments, and there sending properties.
