Yep - I didn't realise the xl had an internal SCSI port - makes the installation of a HD in an XL much easier obviously. And puts a smile on my face for the day.

I think they go as high as 15k RPM. I know there are 15k drives out there.

I'm interested in hearing if it actually worked, because besides the fact that its a 10K drive, its an ultra2 LVD drive, and I wouldn't think the old SCSI implementation in a 2k/2kXL would support that type of a SCSI interface, and I'm guessing that it is NOT backward compatible.

Of course there are, but those are SATA drives. A 10k SATA Raptor drive (from Western Digital for non-nerds) goes for a couple hundred bucks. SATA drives haven't been used widely ever (in PCs not Macs), and when they did have their day, the existence of a 10k one blows my mind. Wouldn't even think they'd go past 5,400 RPMs. I was wrong though.

What I really wanna know is how he managed to power both the reader and HD -- and how'd he double up on the SCSI? Daisy-chaining? If so, how?

EDIT: Scratch the crap about the SCSI HDs, I looked on eBay and nearly every one is 10k-15k. They were used 99% of the time in large serverfarms. Hence the low capacity and super fast speeds -- for redundancy. They're pretty cheap, too.

So I been looking on eBay and most of the drives don't go over $15

What I need to know is if I NEED to use a 50-pin drive or if I can use an 80-pin... basically, what exactly are limitations and restrictions?

In the pic it looks like he uses an 80- or 68- to 50-pin adapter. The fact it says "LVD" on the drive suggests that it is a 68-pin drive though.

I tried to plug an 80-pin SCA drive (with the power and data cables combined in one connector) via an 80-to-50-pin adapter to the external SCSI of an XL. Didn't work. I guess those drives are too new for the MPC.

Interesting. Actually it turns out, though, that all Ultra2 SCSI drives use 50-pin connections, so no need for any type of adapters. "Ultra Wide" SCSI, "Fast-wide," and "Ultra2 Wide" would all require adapters -- they use 68 and 80-pin connections. So now all it seems is that I need to buy an Ultra2 drive off of eBay for $10 and do this mod myself. :)

And, yes, "LVD" denotes 68-pin Ultra2 HDs for whatever reason.
