i got my mpc yesterday, but important question HELP!!!!

question i just got mpc yesterday, i dont have speakers to atleast hear the metronome or somthin to see if its puttin out sound, so i have headphone and its the regular headphones with the connection that pluginto an ipod (the regular small connection) so that small connection. i baught an adapter today it says 6.3mm mono plug to rca socket adapter so i pluged my headphones into this thing wich the end is a bigger connection that fits into the mpc but im gettin no sound im wondering if i got the right connection or what? i mean usually when u plug in headphones u get somthin like little backround noise or somthin very lite that u can tell the headphones/device is on but on this i hear nothing? i got no sounds but i hit record cuz the click should be on and its not even doing it. every function is working on the mpc, just was hoping i got the wrong connection. by the way i am plugging into the right phones connection. but nothing. tried the others to just incase?
