Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Anybody have both of these?

I curious how truly compatible they are. I read that the 500 and the 2KXL can swap seq. snd. wav. and pgm. files. The thing is, I am still learning my 2KXL. So I don't really know what I am looking for on the specification sheets to see how well these guys talk to each other.

I was thinking about getting a 500 so I could leave my 2KXL set up in the studio and whenever I need to go out into the world (becasue of the battery power and size of the MPC500) I'd be able to use the 500 as an extension of the 2000XL. When I go to friends house to get some samples, it would be nice to only have to bring the little guy.

Right now I don't even have a card reader on my 2000, so I guess thats the most important thing before they can share.

thanks,
Woops

Ok, this is the part where I start answering portions of my own questions, but incase anyone was interested in this thread, I just saw this review of the 500 that explains some:

http://www.mpc-tutor.com/article/6/akai-mpc500-review/

So I guess getting sounds from one to the other will be fine, but too much editing, and tracking in one machine may not translate over to the other machine.

So it would work fine as a sample collection device, but if thats all I used it for, thats pretty expensive for that chore...If I looked at is as another instrument all together, that fact would be a bonus feature.

But I will still need a card reader in my 2K.

Or, I guess I could use my computer as a go-between via USB, or a USB card reader to my PC.

(I've lost so much data over the years that as I move to new equipment, I get obsessed about how to properly back up and store stuff, like post-traumatic stress. )

pgm files are not compatible between the 2 units for obvious reasons. the 2000 has 4 banks of 16 samples and the 500 only has 4 banks of 12 samples. that would be like trying to load a pgm file from a 4000 on a 2000. it just doesnt work. you can load snd wav and seq in midi format though.
