How do you Punch in and out of record???

On the mpc2000xl
I read that this was possible on the other akai mpc site but I can seem to work out how to do it.
I start in record hit play I am recording I them hit the record button to drop out of record mode and into play mode but then I can't get back to recording without stopping the mpc?????
Is it possible to go in and out of record without stopping the mpc???
If so how???
If its not possible on the 2000xl is it possible on the mpc1000
Any help appreciated

You can switch it to overdub. It's in the manual.

to punch in simply hit overdub+play while your sequence is already playing.

to punch out simply hit overdub while your sequence is already overdubbing.

the status light over the overdub button will let you know if you are recording or not.
