Zip Disk Error Pt.2

so, i had an 'unexpected-disk end' error appear on the screen of my 2000xl after trying to load an APS file, and i thought 'this is bad, lucky i backed onto floppy'.

the floppy drive is still working, but from zip most large files were crashing (although individual SND files appear to load ok).

now i know the zip has it's unreliability problems, and i have had to re-make entire tracks because of the 'click of death'. but, i reckoned that it was neither a problem with the drive or the disks, rather a problem with the SCSI cable, SCSI port on my MPC, or a problem with the way the MPC is accepting data (especially PGM type files).

to test this i dug out my old 2000 classic and attempted to load files from a zip disk (which is quite difficult as the screen is all but blank). They loaded up without any problems.

so, i concluded the problem was not with zip drive or disks, but with the MPC.

what's wrong with it? is it a problem that can possibly get fixed?

i'm just bumping this post to the top, in the vain hope that someone is able to help me.

failing that, i'll have to call my good friend Roger Linn and demand that he come and fix my machine in person -immediately!

I hope it helps to reinstall the OS but logically it shouldn't make a difference, a corrupted os won't boot, so I doubt that it is a probmem with your OS. I still thinks it is ZIP related. But who knows it's not like the OS is bugfree.

i tried reinstalling the OS but wasnt able to find the 2000xl.bin file on ALL. so i loaded the zip disk thst came with my XL, and it started working fine -all zip disks loading without problem.

being a classic owner originally, it surprised me that the XL booted up without inserting the MPC boot floppy disk, but this never bothered me.

thinking back to what caused my original problem i think it was because i saved an APS file onto a new zip disk with 2 partitions, when i had been using one partitioned into 5 parts. for some reason on the XL for it to recognise a new zip disk i have to move from SCSI-5 to floppy and back again for it to recognise the new data -something that i didnt have to do with the classic. i think i tried to save data on partition 5 on a zip with only 2 partitions, which made it crash.

i left it off for a couple of weeks, tried to reinstall the OS (i think unsucessfully), and whiz-whiz click-clicker-click vrrrrrrrrr... it works fine.

all very confusing -i have no idea what i did, if anything. it works and thats all that matters.
