2000 or the 2000xl

anyone who has used a xl knows exactly what a classic can do. the xl is based on the classic. there are just more options on the xl. and the sound difference is so minor between the two that the human ear can probably hear no dif. its not like were talking about the dif between a 60 and a 5000. im not nocking the classic but if you have the option then get the xl

The 16 level tunning poly/monophone aftertouch is different

Classics are cheaper so if you're on a budget then a good ol' 2k will be more than adequate for making dope beatz!

It may not have as many functions but sometimes less is more

the lack of folder support no time strech or auto chop is goin to make me lean more towards the 2000xl or maybe an 1000

I have used both, never detected any difference in sound. I ended up going back to a classic because with a combined MPC/ computer set up for me anything above the 2k was overkill.
Yeah obviously the XL is a better spec'd machine but there a couple of points where the classic has the edge IMO:

Able to exit 16 levels in record mode
Combined digit/data jog wheel
better pads (at least in the ones I've tried)
Classic feels sturdier to me
Classic looks better

These aren't big deals admittedly, and as I've already mentioned the XL has far more features but just wanted to add to the debate.
I use my classic in conjunction with Ableton Live and Logic, which gives me a lot more than an XL

i agree, i use my 2k with apple soundtrack... and once again the lovely digit/data jog wheel....

no.. the classic has a jog wheel that you spin , and that spins the outer ring which spins the mechanism inside giving you more control etc...

They most likely got rid of it to cut costs.

you nailed it...the mpc 2000xl feels cheap to me + that damn jog wheel!! hah

The jog wheel may be better on the classic but the xl has the better and more useful screen... and better looks in my opinion. Plus it appears to be easier to retrofit different card readers and drives on the xl (I did it so anyone can!), and the ability to use folders is essential to me. It basically means I can track down any sound i've used over the past 9 years in 10 minutes, which is cool as I like to recycle my old sounds from time to time.
