Midi Controller Problems on MPC 2000

Ok so i want to try and play basslines on my Midi controller when 16 levels note var function is selected on my MPC 2000 Classic. I can trigger my samples individulally on my controller kick , snare , etc but can't seem to play my samples chromatically on my keyboard. Ive tried reading the manual but it was not useful can anyone help ?

you would have to assign one note of bass to all pads and tune it . there is no other way to play it chromatically on the mpc2000 classic
