samplig from a c.d. walkman

i was thinking about purchasing a c.d. player to sample from. Im straped for cash, so i had the bright idea to use my cd walkman to sample from. what i want to know is has anybody ever used a portable cd player to sample from? how did the sample come out? or is the results the same as if u used a regular cd player unit. another reason i asked is because im goin to use a stereo 1/4 male to a y rca cable to dual rca to dual 1/4 phone to the mpc. using all the cords just to make it work, will there be any loss of sound quality, or signal degration? let me know... peace and love

It's possible, but depending on the CD player you're using, it might not sound great. I tried sampling off a discman a few times before and when I played back the sample I would hear noticeable noise. It sounded like the sound of the spinning CD(like a high pitched whirring noise) and basically the sound was unusable for sampling purposes. I think its because in portable units, all the circuitry and everything is mushed all together in such a small case. You're better off just copping a cheap single tray real CD player. If you want, you could even cop a cheap DVD player new for like 80 bucks an it'll probably have digital outs.

hmm im thinkin about trying this out. good question. but I do think the more cords you connect together the less the quality will be. but thats my opinion.

Run the CD Player into the mixers "ins" and turn up the level there. The filters on your mixer should silence any unwanted sound and give you more clearance for volume with less "white" noise.

using the phone jack on the cd player right?

yea hes right..run that through ur mixer...but it may not sound perfect....ur betta off copin a cd player suttin u would use in ur home stereo and conect that

Other than drum samples from a CD, that's how I get most of my samples- from a sony discman. I haven't used a mixer for this. I just record from my line out (of discman) to my MPC. The quality is great. I bought my discman off Ebay for $40 about 3 yrs. ago.

I'm thinking maybe if you use the phone jack, that accounts for the poor sample quality. Try 'line out' on your CD player and see if you get a much better sound.

For me it's quick and I'm very happy with the sound quality - I sample vocals all the time this way.

filters ? i dont see any filter fuction on my mixer. are they internal? i forgot to mention im using a very cheap cd walkman, its named after a cheese its called coby!

There should be some type of noise filters in your mixer. And they are internal.

try using a minidisc player...

i have one, and i have a cable that you can put into the optical/line in on the MD player and run that into almost any output...so you can use your MD player to record samples from the TV (if it has a plug for headphones) or your computer for example. and then connect the MD player to your equipment the same way you would with the discman.

it's an easy way to get your own samples from films...i got a lot of old kung-fu films that i could sample from if it wasn't so unoriginal. (inc. "Shaolin VS Wu-Tang"- it's great to hear the samples that you've heard on your CD's. strange feelin when you hear "shaolin shadowboxing...and the wu-tang swordstyle" from your TV)

i used to sample from my discman. I do think the headphone jack makes more noise (especially with the discmans volume turned low!), I found better results using the line in jack. No noticable noise. I used a Sony brand portable discman
