Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Holidayro Sun Oct 04, 2009 11:15 pm
After I sample a sound and then go to trim I dont see the wave properly. It does not show me the kicks and snares just a long black line. I do hear the sample and can slice and chop it. Am I sampling it loud enough or is there just a problem with my screen.

Thanks!!

You should sample louder. But dont turn up the gain on the MPC. Turn up the volume at the source. BTW what is the source you are sampling?

the 2000xl can only sample from vinyl ,if you try to sample from your laptop it wont work...it just wont work.

Not true. I sample from everything with an output.

I love how people talk sh*t and don't offer a solution or a valid argument.

I've sampled different sounds from the web and records as well.

I take samples from ANY sound source.

If I like it, I'll use it.

Not true, you can runthe OUTPUT of any giving soundsource to the INPUT if the mpc. I can sample from anyhing with an audio out, I.E Ipod, turntable, casset deck, cd player, etc.

But, don't oover-drive the sound

Just cause it doesn't show you a digital clip doesn't mean that you're not distorting the sound.

Driving things hot is not always 'good'

I used to do all my mixes -4db

Now I do them to -6db and bring em up a bit in mastering.

They come out clearer- more defined- smoother sounding with more headroom and some air in them.

Also, don't drive a sample that high if you intend to use FX with it, unless you are going to use your FX 100% wet

If you have it driven that hard, then add an effect with wet/dry mix it will clip

Of course you can turn down velocity, but that doesn't truly work 100% as it should,
I've noticed a bit of an oddity in how the MP's route internally and it effects the audio somewhat, driving it harder than normal

It is always best to start with some headroom.

Start your mix with the softest part first, and see where that gets you.

I've found this gives me good headroom, plenty of room for dynamics processing,

and you can always bump up a bit at the master, or get it in mastering
