PC Not Detecting Zip Drive

I bought my 2000XL about 2 months ago which came with a SCSI Iomega 250 Zip Drive.

Today I bought the PCI SCSI adapter to hook my zip drive to my PC, the adapter installs fine all seems well.

For one reason or another when I go to my computer the zip drive is not detected.

Ive been looking for the answer to this problem on these forums for the last few hours but havent seen the fix, anyone have a solution?

PC is running Vista atm.

is the disk pc or MPC formatted?

Power on the external SCSI device before you turn on your computer. SCSI devices are not plug and play like USB -- it scans the system bus at power up for devices.

also if you system is hooked up in a chain, i.e.

mpc -> zip drive -> computer.


then make sure the zip drive termination is set to "off"

My system is hooked up in a chain so I changed the termination setting to off, also powered on the zip before powering on the computer. Still no dice.

I'm starting to think this may be a vista conflict. Do any of you run this setup on a computer with vista?

At this point I'm thinking of downgrading my computer OS to XP.

I've used SCSI devices on 32-bit Vista computers before without any issues. If you are running a 64-bit version of Vista, you may not be able to find drivers.

I would check the manufacturers website for the both the SCSI PCI card and the Zip Drive to make sure you have the correct Vista drivers for both devices.

I dont have much experience with SCSI so I am going to list as much information here as possible to make sure this isnt user error.

Running 32 bit vista

Device manager has the scsi adapter listed as: Adaptec AHA-2910C/2915C/2920C/2930C PCI SCSI controller

The Zip drive is an Iomega 250 Zip SCSI

The back looks like this:



Termanation is set to off
SCSI ID is set to 5

The port Labeled Zip is hooked to the computer
the other port is hooked to the MPC

basically states that the product works with vista but the Iomega software does not. According to that page windows should assign a drive letter to the Zip drive
instead of labeling it as a zip drive.

If I hook the zip drive to only the MPC it can read disks from it so I'm pretty sure the hardware is functioning properly

You could have an issue with the cable going from the PC to the Zip drive.

What happens when you hook up the Zip drive to the computer without the MPC in the device chain? You will need to turn the termination on if it's the last device in the chain

Make sure the SCSI ID for the PCI Card is not 5 or 6.

consider a usb zip drive. I picked one up for about $9 the other day

When I hook the zip drive to the PC without the MPC in the chain and with the termination set to on it still doesn't detect it.

As far as the PCI card there wasn't any type of jumper or anything to set it to a certain ID. I'm unsure of how to check what it's set to or even change the setting if needed. I will see what I can find out about this around the net and let you know what I come up with.

I'm still having problems finding out what the SCSI ID of the PCI card is set to or how to change it.

If it's not a toggle switch on the card, it's probably controlled onboard with software.

It may be listed in the device manager. Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager

Or there may be a GUI in software that you can download from Adaptec.

OK I found some software on the Adaptec page that I had overlooked.

According to this it is a bios update which needs to be booted by a disk at startup.

So I burn the file to a cd, restart my comp, load bios, make my cdrom the #1 boot priority and save the settings.

Nothing happens. Restart the system again and check to make sure the settings are correct, comp boots up straight to vista.

I'm beginning to think I'm not as computer savvy as I may have thought.
