Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I just got my grand ol 2000 classic en everything seems to be working great. I bought This thing off ebay and it came with an external flash card drive But when I tried installing it via SCSI it just won't read it at all. I tried like 100000 ways to try to connect it differently but still no luck. I know that the back port number thingy has to be set to something different than the mpc and I tried doing that as well.

Please any insight would be much appreciated..
If this thing doesn't work than I ll be fudged.

Do you have the device terminated?..
On the back of the unit, there are usually 2 connectors where you can attach the cable.
SCSI needs a terminator in the spare connector. It's a small block with on connector.
Without this, the SCSI bus won't be able to find the devices properly..

Do you know what connectors are on the device?.. any pics?..

is the scsi port on your newly-acquired MPC2000 working? you must confirm this first.

have you tried connecting a different drive such as a scsi zip drive?

try it and if the zip drive is not recognized, then the scsi port fuse is blown.

assuming it works, try a different scsi cable.

if the drive is not recognized, then it can be the card drive.

i guess the idea is to start your troubleshooting from the MPC2000 scsi port and work your way to the card drive.

It's quite likely you need to terminate the drive fella... get yourself one of these

http://cgi.ebay.com/Centronic-Centronics-50pin-Male-Female-SCSI-Terminator-/120681415150?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c192c41ee#ht_1029wt_907

The connectors on the drive end are 50 pin Centronics and the MPC end is 25 pin SCSI
The MPC will be terminated internally, but you must terminate the other end(Drive).

there is a possibility it could be a fault on either, but it's relatively easy and cheap to try termination first

good luck

give it a try. terminate on the drive side. see what kin of results you get.

What is the part number of the card reader you are trying to use? I haven't seen a SCSI card reader with that faceplate before.

Picture of inside the unit would be very helpful.

If there is a IDE to SCSI adapter inside unit, you need to make sure the toggle switches are set properly for the SCSI ID and termination. Usually these boards have termination on them and you will not need an additional external adapter.

i've seen this card drive (uncovered) in a local studio. works nice. there is an ide/scsi board. I remember this board had the scsi id (jumpered) set to 2. And terminated as evidenced by 2 jumpers set in the 3rd and 4th position.

drive should be terminated. but i mentioned earlier externally terminating to see if results would be different. but i just thought it would be good to start troubleshooting at the MPC2000 scsi port before trying many other points along the scsi chain. a blown scsi port will not allow any drive to be recognized. if you can somehow get your hands (or borrow one from a buddy) on a scsi zip drive, maybe you can confirm the zip drive is found on id 5.

my last reply shows arrows moved so i am clarifying.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

jumper set on position 3 and 4 for termination

jumper set on position 7 to set scsi id 2

ayo thanks for all the insight

anyways i tried opening my Flash Drive today and was quite frantic about messing something up. i tried to the best of my ability but i could not tell if thier was an IDE to SCSI adapter inside the unit or if their were any toggle switches..

however i just found a website thats selling the same exact SCSI flash drive that i have http://mpcstoragesolution.com/non-hotsw ... iter_drive
it says that it has to be recognized on SCSI id 2 and to my understanding the one on the site does not have a terminator on it. okay so when i tried doing it on channel 2 it says "SCSI Read error!!" Gonna see if the terminator will make a difference..

if you opened the drive up, the scsi to ide board s/b clearly visible. also, you should be able to see the jumpers. as mentioned above, there are 2 jumpers together at position 3 and 4. if those jumpers are set, my understanding is, that the drive is terminated.

i bought a drive from mpcstoragesolution.com some time ago and it works perfectly. also, i saw this drive at a studio without the case and saw the scsi to ide board connected to the card reader and the ports. if you do not see the board, then it is missing.

i have a question what kind of flash cards are you using? have they been previously-owned? are they any good? gotta tell you if those flash cards were inserted or removed with the power on, then the flash cards are certainly corrupted (ruined). i think the scsi read error may be because the cards are not readable anymore.

i dont know what the board is supposed to look like lol.. and yea the cards were pre owned so i ono.. ???

so, it was the flash card. Great! Easy fix.

for installing 32MB sticks, the following video is along the same same lines for installing 32MB in an MPC2000:

Be careful taking it apart. good luck!
