Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By buzina8 Sun Feb 03, 2013 5:08 pm
Hello all,

Few days ago I bought me a MPC2000xl without the EB16-card. I want to know now before I decide to buy it. Is it possible to use realtime EQ, Compression etc in Pro Tools when I sync the MPC ? I want to use the MPC as a master.

All I want is hitting the pads on the MPC and EQ in PT, and record as usual on the MPC.
Is it possible, how? what do I need more ? I have Pro Tools and a MIDI Interface (Fast Track C400)

Please let me now. Thanks !

Yeah that's totally doable, but if you want to eq individual sounds you'll need an audio interface to run multiple outputs from the mpc at once. So you can eq your kick different than your snare by having them assigned to different channels. Or you could record each track 1 by 1 and eq in post which is what a lot of people do.

^ yeah what he said... but you'll need the 8 outs or else you will be adding the fx to the entire master output... unless you record the entire beat and add fx later.

Lol I'm stupid, yeah your gonna need the 8 outs in addition to the 8 inputs audio interface. Actually I'd go for more than 8 inputs on the audio card cause then you can use all 10 outputs on the mpc (using the panning trick to turn the stereo outs into independent dual mono outs).

Thanks for the reactions,

But I still dont get it :( So the 8 outs are necessary ? That means that I have to buy the Individual Board ?

Explain step by step please :?:

So again, Is it possible without a Board-card (IB or EB) ?
Which audio-interface do you recommend to run multiple outputs ?
Is the only way without a Board-card by recording tracks 1 by 1 in PT? (When it comes to this alternative, do I have to use my MPC as a Slave ?)

well you can record your song into pro tools by solo-ing every sound and recording them one by one into pro tools... where you add effects later... or if you have the 8 outs you can record more than one at a time with an interface that has multiple ins... for example the motu 828, or ultralite... or any of the ones that have lots of inputs.

The effects card eb16 is not as good quality as the fx in protools. It has two multi fx channels with distortion, reverb, delay, 4 band EQ, and that is about it... then you have 2 reverb only channels. You can tweak those to a limited extent... and then you may add pads to those 4 channels to add some fx with a wet/dry type of thing. You can for sure add all pads to one fx channel... but you cant really have a different unique effect on each sound for an entire beat. So it's limited, it is expensive for what it can do... but having it is better than not having it since there is no other alternative for fx built in the box... my suggestion is get it if it is cheap... dont spend more than 200 bucks on it ever.

The 8 outs is good... but that is a workflow thing. Look into how that is used around the forums and decide if it's something you cant do without.... all it does is allows you to make the kick go to an output, the snare to a different output.. and so on. It saves time but isn't mandatory to track out a beat with each instrument isolated in their own stems.

Im gonna record it 1 by 1, I guess there is no way to EQ before the recordings without the IB or EB.

Thanks bro !

well if you had a hardware eq then you could

is it possible into the MPC first ? And after track out to PT. Or directly into PT ?

sure i guess.. you could eq the record you are sampling with your dj mixer and record it that way... but for me honestly... I prefer doing that stuff in the daw so if I change my mind later it wont be too late to make changes... you cant undo a filter once it's in the recording, right?

Yes youre right, but my drums are loaded from the cardreader. So does not have a DJ-mixer. Can it still be done with a hardware EQ? I want to EQ in the MPC first because I want to hear the frequencies of the sounds Im using before I record it.

If you have a card reader why dont you sample into the mpc. load that sound up on your pc and make a filtered copy (not drastic just to give you a idea) and keep a copy or your original sample. load that back up into the mpc and you can go on with making beats and you still have a unaffected copy in case you want to change your filters later on in a DAW.

I know, but thats not what I want. Im just searching for a extern eb16-alternative (only EQ cares). Sampling a sound from card, EQ with extern eb16-alternative, and record into MP.

when you record into pro tools... you will get to hear the fx you add before you export the project to a stereo wav file of the entire song. There is no built in alternative that you can add, save, and re-open later with the ability to change the fx.... unless you record the stems of the mpc beat with no fx into protools and add fx pluggins... save the project... when you reopen it you can still tweak the pluggins.
