broken MCD?

I recently got a MPC2000XL MCD, with the 1.2 OS, and when I try to use CF cards to format them, The MPC doesnt even recognize it being there. When I go to the format the CF card, nothing shows up in the ATAPI part. I think it is a problem with the MCD drive, because the light next to the CF card port doesnt light up at all. I have tried a 15mb Sandisk Card and a 2gb Transcend card. (I know it will only recognize 1gb,I am also having trouble partitioning it). If anyone can give me some insight to fixing my problem, or partitioning the CF card, I would be very appreciative. Thank You.

open it up, unplug everything from mcd, replug firmly.

First I checked the pins, and they looked fine to me. They all looked straight and were all there. Next I took off the back cover and unplugged and plugged back in all the outputs or whatever you would like to call them. Before I put the cover back on, I noticed there is no RAM cards. I have a picture to go along with this, but I am assuming I need one. I will probably get 2 x 16mb cards to get 32mb of RAM.

It should show up on the load/save format screen as an ATAPI option in the Device: field.

Are you moving the cursor to the Device: field, and trying to change it with the data wheel to ATAPI (other options should be F-ROM or SCSI-1/2/3/4/5/6/7)? Does it show ATAPI as an option?

If it recognises the reader, it should show ATAPI as an option instead of Floppy.

If you see ATAPI, it is recognising it. It you see Floppy, it is not recognising it.

Post up a photo showing how it is connected.

Are you using a 40 wire/40 pin IDE cable, or an 80 wire/40 pin cable?

it is recognizing it then, as it does show ATAPI there. I uploaded several pictures to imgur for people to check out. The first two are of where the MCD connects to the MPC. Its 40 pin, but i do not know the difference between a 40 wire/40 pin IDE cable, or an 80 wire/40 pin cable. The last picture is of the empty RAM inputs.

40 wire/40 pin vs 80 wire/40 pin IDE cables, in my experience, the MPC2000XL does not like 80 wire/40 pin cables...

They should be public now. it looks like I have the 80 wire 40 pin

where should i go about getting a 40 wire 40 pin IDE cable? I have seen some on ebay. Should i get one with 2 connectors or is multiple connectors fine? Would this one work?

Can see the thumbnail versions of the 3 photos in the gallery, but when clicking on them to see a larger version it says 'This account has no public images'. Try logging out of imgur and then seeing if you can see them.

Would have to have a look at your photos to see if I can tell if it is 40 wires or 80 wires.

Probably best to get a cable with just 2 connectors, but I don't think that matters with 40 wire cables. It can make a difference with 80 wire cables, as they can be made to support cable select, which has designated connectors for Master/Slave/Motherboard (black/grey/blue).

OK, you already have a 40 wire/40 pin IDE cable, so that is not the issue.

Must be something else.

When you select ATAPI in the device field, with a CF card inserted, does F6 become a DO IT button?

If so, press it.


What sort of card reader is it, was it sold as being MPC2000XL compatible?

Do it doesnt show up for me in the ATAPI field. I do not know what card reader it is, but I think it is the original that came with the MPC, because the barcode on the bottom place has MCD on it.
