is there a new mpc in the works?

cryptic reference to a new mpc in a review of roland's mv8000 in this months (october '04) 'futuremusic' magazine (uk)

" ... this box certainly lays down the gauntlet to Akai, who allegedly have another MPC product in the wings" p39, reviewer Jon Musgrave

... and guys'n'girls let's not get into roland vs. akai on this thread that's not the issue ;)

so any ideas what mr musgrave is refering to? something between the the 1k and the 4k or a successor to the 4k perhaps?

lol! yup ... hard to imagine where they're gonna go if it is an actual 'mpc', hey maybe it's software?

or perhaps they're gonna throw a real curve ball like nintendo did recently with their DS handheld, oh no, not an ordinairy handheld, it's dual touch screen!! ... everyone's a little bemused

so how about the MPC-BodySuit, an MPC you wear and you hit various parts of yourself to trigger it etc freaky

i hope its not software. but whatever it is, its 2004 and the possibilities are endless. it'll definately be a powerhouse.

Did Akai ever work out the bugs that was in the MPC4000 yet?

Believe it or not, this has already kind of been done.....by experimental performance-artist Laurie Anderson. She had a suit with triggers in it just like you said, and she would hit parts of her body to make music.
She also made a pair of sunglasses with a contact mic in them, and she would rock beats by hitting her knuckles against her skull.
Another invention of hers was a violin with a tape-head installed, and a violin-bow with a strip of pre-recorded reel-to-reel tape instead of the horse hair.
Then when she played the violin, it was like scratching.

She's basically a genius, and she's been doing it since the early 80s.
I've had the pleasure of seeing her perform 3 times.

Sidenote: I've heard her music sampled on a few Def Jux releases. :wink:

I believe a majority of all bugs on the MPC-4000 have been squashed by the latest
OS's which have fixed bugs, fixed the effects bus volume levels, and implemented
the audition from harddrive a feature that was advertised but never implemented until
the latest OS 1.60. It's been fairly stable machine for me, I can't speak for everyone
else.

Actually the better question to ask:

Has there even been an MPC *not* in the works?

Akai (like Roland, Korg and the others) have never stopped product development.

That violin thing sounds ill yo. kinda like that keyboard that uses tape- the melatron i believe its called.
