what would you do ?

Check this out , what would you do when you tell a artist that you are
working with to come alone because of lack of space in your apartment
/home studio and he/she always manages to bring some one with them?

1 If the person you bring is not paying for studio time, why bring em?.
2. If the person is not your manager why bring em ?
3. If the person is not getting on the track or produced the
track with you why bring em ?
4. I don't like that ish it's like why is homey bringing all these
different cats are they scheming and plotting or just excited to
see how a studio operates.
5. then cats disturb you like, can I get some water ? or can I use the
bathroom ?
6. I got a job so the lil pennies that I make is just allowance for my
son or lunch for the next day.
I just had a lil experience where homey came with his partner
and then about a hour into the session some cat rings the bell
unexpectedly looking for him . what the hell is this ?
Your a grown ass man. why do you need people checking on you
if you made it in and out the studio the other tens times unharmed
why is this going on.
7. That ish f'd upped my vibes some unknown cat sitting in front of my
crib alarming my neihbors.
8. Why do people think that studio's are f.ing hangout spots
me and my wife live in a brownstown with 5 other families
and I try to keep traffic to a minimum , this cat got my neihbor
ringing my bell out of concern because dude looked that sheisty
and we look out for each like that .
9. This is how people get set up or there sH!t robbed.
what would you do ? would you dead homey from coming through
or would you give him one more chance ?
My decision has already been made just curious for some feed back?
I got too much ish to lose Motif es 6, mpc2000xl, trinity rack, proteus2000
with maximum of 3 cards, Krk rocket 8's, mackie mixer and protools le,
Dell pentium 4 2.53 ghz 250 internal hd plus external 120gb harddrive
sony external dvd-r -rw Techinics 1200 plus behringer mixer tht's not even
counting the possibility of savages ravaging the apartment for t.v's dvd player,sony digital8 video camera.

nosey / concerned neihbors I shouldn't worry ,
However R.I.P JAM MASTER JAY had all of that too and all it took was one person to buzz somebody in

It's your studio they pay you to use your studio not to run your studio, you're in charge so you decide who comes in and who doesn't. If cats don't like it like that then they better **** off and find another studio or get their own gear together.

i dont mind if people bring they homie ova. but your right about gettin set up for robbery!! thats a huge possibility. it has happened to me!!!!! just not with studio equipment.

like ptr said you decide. if cuzz dont wanna listen he'll have to suffer because his folks wanna tag along. i dont mind because its usually a good time if they bring they folks. but thats just me. and usually they'll contribute some drink for me. and everybody is str8. but i dont have a lotta room too, and im not to the point where people come over to record so i dont have folks over to record vocals. yet.

but it depends on how shady and sheisty this cat is. if he seems like he the type to be up to something, i wouldnt let him come back. but your still kinda flowers, cause him and 2 of his homies already know where ya crib is. but i wouldnt trip man. i would give him another chance. but thats just me.

I feel what your saying but I figure the less familiar a person gets with how things operate at your spot, the less likely they'll try that B.S it's like this
the more comfortable people feel with you it's easier for them to try to test
you, another thing I don't allow drinking and smoking to jump off in my apartment it's not that type of party. I don't want the excuse of yo I had too much to drink or smoke to cause any problems. Another thing if police
ever run up in your spot because of some canibis fumes and tear your shit up it's your fault for allowing that to go down. Only one of the other cats was in the spot for a hour not enough time for him to map shit out and the other kid never even made it into the apartment , the original artist it's a wrap for him , his manager broke it down to him that he has to find somewhere for him to record after I told him the door is closed .
If you decide to drink and get high with your clients it no longer becomes
a client type relationship or remains professional it becomes some homeboy type sh!t then before you know it your studio is a hangout spot.
Its different if your dealing with cats you knew for years or people you grew up with, but when it's people that you really don't know! don't get too
friendly remeber friends can be your worst enemy.

Take that camera of yours and take pics of everything, including shoes, closet, dvds, CABLES, disks, everything...........put it in a safe spot, or give it to your mom.Dont give people your address, make a rule sheet that you can pin up at the door or something.....every time someone new comes, or even old people, make em read it.......make it fun, but serious.

I would have a rule that says:

1. people i dont know, need to show me thier ID and write down thier full name; if not, they wont be let in. GOTTA have ID though.

at first it will sound like you are being a dick, but once you get everybodies name, you dont have to worry, even on consecutive occasions....and its probably easier then telling your homie that he cant bring anybody over!

Let your homie know that you arent doing it because you dont trust him, but someone broke into your niebohors car and "your landlord got complaints, so you made an agreement with him to check everybodies id, otherwise he wouldnt let you run the studio". Also SAY to him, that it might just be easier if he came by himself.

iF YOUR HOMIE KNOW where you live, thats all you need, you dont even neccessarily have somebody over to rob you! AND dont let anybody know your "real schedule" or make it seem like somebody is always home.......like "my other roomate"

Are you charging these people by the hour to use your studio? If not, maybe you should start. If they know that any wasted time is costing them money they might stop wasting it.

Cyrus's idea of the rule sheet is good. Have something done that you can e-mail to them in advance ( that way you have a bit more contact info on them ) or, if you don't have a website you could get a bit of free web space just for this.

Make it clear the studio is in your home & there just isn't room for an audience. Add some technical-sounding stuff about insurance & landlords if you think it helps.

Make everything sound professional & business-like beforehand. It might be a case of pretending you are busier than you actually are. Rather than say "I'm free every day next week" say something like "I've got to finish this album project by friday, but the client doesn't need to be here every day, so let me know what day is good for you & I'll try & fit you in."

Yeah its a sticky situation. I have had that problem on numerous occasions. I finally figured out how to remedy this. You see I bought a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun and have it on a shelf in plain sight, right over the mixer in the control room. I have a little sign over it that reads. "Forget what you thought, cause I already know the outcome". I also don't have too much room for visitors to sit, after a few hours of standing, a funny thing happens they don't come back with their artist friend the next session. Oh and renters insurance helps just in case.

I just read your post that shit had me laughing at the computer screen like a madman , I wouldn't keep any weapons in plain sight let the element of surprise get em. Back in the days when I used to roll with some crazy ass Rastas theyed keep a gun that was unloaded on a shelf in hands reach for anybody that wanted to try to rob the weed gate ,so you'd end up with a empty gun in your hands and wind up dead, only I knew it was empty and them,I think when you let people know that arms are in the vincity they'd know how to come at you? so the element of surprise will get em all the time and I'd hate to get hit with my own shotgun it depends how swift and powerful you are by the time you reach and cock that thing back a small handgun can easily be placed on your temple.
What more can I say? never let your enemies, clients, friends or family
know what kind of weapons of mass destruction you have period.
