I found the cause of "The Click of Death" for exte

A few months ago, my zip drive started clicking. Replaced it, it worked fine for another 4-5 months and started clicking again. So I then I decided to switch to the CF reader, but still needed a working zip drive to load all my old stuff and sounds. Bought another zip drive from Ebay. Got it, it didn't work immediately. Seller exchanged it. Got that one, still immediately didn't work. So I bought another one from a different seller, still did not work immediately. So I figured, I couldn't have gotten 3 bad drives in a row. So I changed the scsi cable to the MPC. Still didn't work.

Then, what I thought would not work, turned out to be the problem. I changed the power cord for the zip drive. For all the different zip drives I bought, I always just swapped the drive and always kept the original power cord. So this time, I changed the power cord to the one the seller sent me with the zip dirve, and now it works with no clicking. When I connect the original power cord, it immediately starts clicking. Maybe this will work for everyone. Good luck!

It sounds too good to be true,but I'll remember this tip anyway :) I still have to use zip drive with my other sampler,so...Hope it won't broke though.

That just 1 of the problems belonging to the click, inadequate power to the internal mechanism of the drive.

You can still get clicking from a bad drive itself, bad disk too.

man why u dealing with zip when its cheaper to install a mcd reader in the mpc...

When my zip drive went out...I did the age old bang tv on the side or top trick but instead of banging it I threw it against the wall in frustration and it worked fine ever since...Eventually got the card reader and its a blessing...

i beat the sh*t out of one of my zip drives once and it started working, so the method does work.

I got the click of the death from both of my zip drives with the same power supply ( the old style big cube one), I replaced the power cable with the newer style and they both work fine. I have had several zip drives die on me but this is the first fix I've ever found.

You are the millionth person to ask this, please do a search and you'll find an answer.

Or I could just say no but Nicole will come behind me and say "yes" and proceed to explain that if you go that "yes" route on the 2k classic it's very costly and you might wanna just skip that all together but then if you read even the faintest "yes" you are "still" going to be stoked but more and more people will just steer you towards getting a 2kxl instead which you might not want I dunno it IS afterall ultimately your choice but who's to say, you might just be willing to get a 2kxl JUST so you can install a card reader even though it STILL has a few more imortant options than the 2k classic cause if you think about it if you had to ask this question in the first place you are NOT ready to go through the process or even begin to understand the process of this card read inside a 2k classic thingy.

what about internal drives? they use the mpc's psu, and ive seen them get the click of death?

Well thanks for the info i guess.

I have just joined the forum and didnt bother to search and have only just got my 2k classic (got a cheap deal) etc etc and have no real need to upgrade as yet (or probably ever), if the cf option is alot more hassle with a 2k ill just stick to the external zip. I was only asking out of curiosity really and not because i had any concrete plans to mod my mpc. Although having just looked at the installation guide in another post i suspect i could do it with my eyes closed, but that is besides the point.
