zip drives!

ok, so i have an iomega 250mb zip drive, i bought a 25 pin male to 50 pin scsi cable, theres 2 slots in the back of the zip drive. one is a male slot that says "zip" over it, the other is a female slot that has like a box over it. im plugged into the female part. i changed my mpc to read the scsi drive as opposed to the 3 1/2 floppy, but i noticed there are several scsi selections to choose from. when i hit load, it just says waiting and nothing happens. now i decided to plug that bad boy in while the machine was on, which probably wasnt very smart, but i didnt want to lose a beat i just did. anyway. whats the problem. did i break something or am i set up wrong?

Theres 2things that could be going on here.

1. You just killed your SCSI fuse which your gonna suffer for. Never mess with the SCSI Port while the MPC is on. If this fuse blows, you'll be without your MP for quite a while. Fuse replacements are like trying to find weapons of mass destructruction in uknow where.

2. You aint set the device number on the back of the Zip drive to coresponde with the device number your selecting when u ask the MP to find the drive. On the back of the drive set device number to 1. When you turn on the MP and go into the load screen, move DEVICE to SCSI-1. If the MP finds the drive you'l be able to load up whatever is on the drive and all is well. If not, problem 1 could be the result to a little impatience.

Try checking the SCSI termination jumer/switch. The ID number of the external SCSI on 2kxl is 6 per chptr 13 pg 190 in the 2kxl manual..

Try it first. No point thinking about a new fuse if you dont need 1. That can really get you down

yeah, thee AGGOOONNNYYYY..

i plugged my Harddrive into my up and running MPC a thousand times, and i didnt have any problems like that...I guess(and hope) its something else...
dont sure though...

so get this, i emailed the akai service center in california, they told me that the xl doesnt even have an scsi fuse, only the regular 2000 has the fuse, so i guess i didnt blow it if it dont exist. thats good news.

i checked to see if there was a device switch on my zip. NOTHING. all there is in the back of it is a male slot which is empty, the female slot where the plug is going into and the spot for the main power, nothing else.

The device button is there. It has to be. Its reall small. Should say SCSI ID or something like that. You usually gotta press the buttons with a pin or something to change em.

Have another look

If there is no SCSI ID switch that says 5 or 6 then you my friend have a Serial Port ZIP Drive, not a SCSI. Read the bottom panel because it can be very difficult to determine from just eyeballing the connectors.

in short, does that mean that my zip is useless? haha

You can still hook it up to a PC That was comforting to hear that the 2KXL does not have a SCSI fuse though. One less worry!

If no ID 5 or ID 6 switch is present, then the drive is NOT SCSI. The drive comes in parallel, SCSI, IDE, USB, and Firewire versions. The parallel version uses a 25 pin connector too, but it wont work with SCSI.

whats the right scsi zip drive to get with the mpc 2000 and how much does it cost cause i just bought an iomega zip drive100 and it doesnt have no scsi id and my mpc isnt reading it . im really really FUKIN pissed....
