Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By LateArrival101 Fri Jun 08, 2007 12:26 am
hey guys.....
there's a part at the VERY end of this song that i wanna sample (if anyone gets the chance...download Depeche Mode's "It Doesn't Matter 2"
from the album Black Celebration (1986)). it's all alone....just one hit at the very end.

off the top of my head...the sample sounds like the note's an E.

so...my question is:

what would be the most ideal way to make more notes out of it?
like...say i wanna make an entire octave.

what would be the best way to do so?

also...if i were to begin doing this...would the other sounds besides the original begin speeding up/slowing down?

i wanna make them so that they stay the same length...but change notes.
cuz i've fooled around with stuff before and noticed that if u pitch shift the sample it gets faster/slower...

but is it also true that if u DO check a setting that keeps it the same length, the quality begins changing as you create different notes?

please let me know what's the most ideal way this is generally done.
i would WANNA do this straight from my MPC2000XL, but if there's another efficient way of doing this too...let me know.
i got a G5 and PC with a digi002.

thanx so much :-)

Time stretch AND pitch shift.

There is no one function that will do that in the 2k.2kxl.

Easier to go with a wave editor and tiem stretch then pitch shift, or the other way around, you'll have to do both though.

.....will NOT get you EVERY note in an octave..... :) :( :(

Autochromatic will though, but you'll still be left with the problem of short/long samples. Time stretching will STILL be needed after using the chromatic feature in xl or making your own chromatic on the 2k.

cool.

got it.

so i'd bring in the sample...change the pitch to whatever i want...

then stretch it so it matches the original length of the original...right?

btw...thanx Lampdog and dopedee.

so how do ya'll, personally, do this?
i'm sure everyone does it differently...i just wanna see who does it how.

From what my ears tell me and if i understand the chromatic set up that lamp is talkin about; under the program menu you'd change the note numbers so thery're in numerical order not spaced out to the midi standard or whatever it is.

So the first pad under bank A would be the loweset number (i believe 36 dont quote me on it). The 2nd pad would be 37, 3rd would be 38, so on and so forth. You should get the change in notes that you're lookin for.

sample it open it in ableton, transpose it, and export it, do this for every note. youll spend to much time waiting for the mpc to do the calculations. alternatively you could find a loop point in the sample if it has a constand volume, this will get rid of the need to timestrech.

if youve got a mac and pc surely you have some music software. if so you'll soft ware will do this in a far easier and quicker way - then you can chuck the sounds back to the pads
see the link for more info - what you're talking about is multisampling

if you have another sampler (im assuming you dont) like a S 5/6000 then you can simply spread the sample across your keyboard and play it like anything else....

thats one method

great.

thanx everyone.

so...i had a question.

i've came to love cool looking sampling keyboards like the Emulator II and stuff like that...
sampling and spreading individual sounds along the keyboard...but,

how does that apply to the mpc?
i mean...i'm thinking the mpc is pretty much the same thing as an emulator or any other sampling keyboard just without the keys right?

my goal is to be able to make a BUNCH of samples...and set them up however i want on my keyboard.

is that a common practice with the mpc?
i mean...do i just hook up a midi keyboard controller to my mpc and i could assign the sounds like that?

what are some common methods of doing this (assigning sounds to wherever on my keyboard)?
i mean...i know i can do this with a midi keyboard and laptop...but,
how did this/does this get down WITHOUT a laptop...u guys feel me?

let me know.

thanx a bunch :-)

p.s.
and if i WERE to do this with a computer, what are some of the programs that are used to do this?
Kontakt? would whatever program that does this have to run in ANOTHER program like pro tools or cubase or something?

It's the mpc standard not the MIDI standard. Roger Linn was a genius but I still don't understand the reasoning behind 37, 36, 42, 82.

35 is the lowest 98 is the highest. For mapping a keyboard, the pads don't matter as long as the pitch in the parameters matches the note. What I mean is instead of pressing pad A1 then assigning the sound, just move the cursor to the Note:## feild and scroll through them. Use 66 or 67 as your middle note (pitch 0) and go up and down in incraments of 10 from there.
