OS 1.20

having problems getting OS 1.2 on my XL from a floppy.

i DLed the OS from akaipro onto my pc, unzipped the file and saved it to a floppy. then i brought the floppy over to the MP and its not seeing the file??

what am i doing wrong?

i believe the card reader i have requires me to use 1.20.. but the problem is, i have to have it on the MP before the reader is installed. right now the reader is not being recognized as a ATAPI device at all, so trying to put the OS on a CF card and into the reader is pointless.

i need to get the OS into the MP. i tried formatting the floppy on the MP and the PC, but the only thing i keep seeing in the MP is a bunch of question marks in the field that its supposed to show 1.44 for the floppy. in the file field, it completely blank as if there is no file on the disk. the only thing the MP is recognizing, is the floppy drive itself.

im thinking maybe the drive is no good..

...maybe the disk is damaged?
try it through scsi?
does it take lower OS versions?

i dont think its the disks.. i tried like 10 different floppies..

i think the drive is bad because even after i leave the load screen and go back to the main screen i can still hear the drive running/spinning. im going to try a new drive and report back..

where do i format, the pc or mpc?

got it!! it was a bad floppy drive..

loaded 1.2, the card reader is in and is being recognized...

I had the exact same problem u had when I tried to install my mcd, but I never got it to work. ...So I just went to back to using floppies on the same floppy drive.

So u loaded the 1.20 OS on a new floppy drive, then switched it for the mcd, is that it?

the original XL floppy drive i had suddenly stopped working, so i dug up another floppy drive from an old pc and installed in the XL.. brought the floppy disk over to the pc and loaded 1.20 OS on it, then brought it back to the XL and loaded it up..

once it was loaded up, i took out the floppy drive and put in the card reader, booted up and the reader showed up in the load screen..

is this for the $17 reader? if so, any luck getting it to save?

yup, i have the $17 reader and it saves, but when the MP is turned off, anything you saved is somehow erased...

its a weird thing...

Do you take the card out after you saved and then turn the MPC off?

nah, i left it in there when i turned off the mpc...

you think that may be the reason its not saving?

just tried it and its still doing the same thing..

it actually saves when the mpc is turned on, but appears to erase anything that is saved when the mpc is shut off. there has to be something mixed up somewhere. if the drive is read only, then i shouldn't be able to save when the MPC is on.

when i save something, i can actually see the saved file in the load screen.

I have one coming in the mail shortly so keep me informed if you figure it out.
I better think about how I'm going to upgrade my OS too. I have an intenal zip right now, but only a floppy drive for my pc. hmmm...
