The Adaptec Utility needs a bootable floppy. If you are running off a CD, you need to make the CD bootable -- it'a a PITA to make CDs bootable since you may go through quite a few until you get it right.
A better suggestion....
If your motherboard supports it and if you have one laying around, make a bootable USB flash disk using HP Flash Drive Boot Utility which you can find on the web. You don't have to have an HP USB stick, it will work with any stick.
