ummmm....I don't remember the classic having the track-mute screen like the xl......track muting is like on the 3000; you have to advance track by track to mute/solo.....they're not all displayed on one screen at the same time like the XL, no way.......
I had bought the 2000xl after 6 years with my classic, loaded up a beat i'd was working on the day before onto the XL after unpacking it.....and sure enough, the kick drum sounded dramatically weaker. Even my roommate noticed (my lab was in the living room).
Yes, there's tons of hype goin around, but this is my experience from an experiment in a controlled environment. Take it or leave it. Both are dope machines. You'd do fine with either.

Actually I felt the same way about the sound characteristics between 2000 classic and 2000XL. I could not compare side by side, so I am not sure about it. I didn't use 2000 classic much before selling 2000 classic, so cannot say for sure.

Your not imagining things, there is definitely a difference in sound characteristic when comparing the classic to the xl. Its not that surprising considering that they
have some different components inside.

The A/D converters in the 2000 classic processes the sound
In a way that sounds very warm and full to me. In fact I prefer the way my classic makes drums knock over my Asr10 with boost on at 30khz. The sound from my xl seemed to be much thinner when compared to my other equipment.

My first mpc was the 2000xl but I made the switch to my 2000classic and never looked back, and yes they do swing differently.

Maybe you are right, but I don't remember those two sounded drasticly, IF there was diffence.
I just rememeber that 2000 classic sounded slightly more grainy than XL, but the samples I had were all taken from dusty vinyls that time. So I still not sure, and even IF there was, the difference was tiny.

The thing is, even imported WAV files will have that grainy MPC2000s sound when triggered on 2000s.
To be honest, I've never really loved how 2000/2000XL sounds (very grainy), but they do often sound great, when all samples are mixed and sequenced.

I went totally opposite route! Different folks for different stroke!
But I don't know about the different "swing."
Both are very good sequencers.
Like I said before, I couldn't stand the 2000 classic's lack of data management functions, and other things (no folders, no IDE, no internal SCSI port, not easy to access under hood, having to load OS for each boot, harder to repair etc.) I moved on to XL and I'm happy about it.

I've heard both together side by side (I have a 2kxl and a friend at the time had a 2k). I remember neither of us were
impressed at all with any difference found. Same source sampled into each mpc separately. Difference is so small not even worth mentioning or caring about for me.

I still haven't had an XL to use for comparison. But I love the warmth of the 2000 better than the 1000, from my experience.
Back in the day, a friend of mine sampled a 909 we were using on his 2000. I never heard a 909 kick drum sound so full and punchy on any other sampler. That's why I still use the 2000. It's better for all my drums, IMO.
