AT MPC-TUTOR IN SHEFFIELD STEEL CITY
AND SIMON IN AUSTRALIA
STRAIGHT UP SKILLS GUYS . SO SIMPLE I FEEL SILLY ! can i put i down to having only the one midi cable in the house ( not really coz i coulda reversed it ages ago ! ) so i put it down to "short term memory loss". Im sure i tried midi both ways round like 2 years ago!

Thanks guys , this helps me keep luving this beast for a while longer , im not giving up to a laptop soon . . . . . . .

a hot swappable CF card reader will now be the last thing to do ! i read Compuapps do them ? anywhere cheaper at all ? maybe i should reread the thread .

Yes, that should work, connect the MIDI out of the keyboard to a MIDI in on the MPC.

When you do this, you need to turn local MIDI off on the keyboard, so that the keyboard is no longer internally connected to the keyboard's internal sound engine.

This is so that you are using the keyboard only as an external MIDI keyboard for the MPC, and the keyboard sound engine only as an external MIDI synth for the MPC. You don't want the keyboard playing internal keyboard sounds directly, when connected to the MPC.

If you can't work it out, let us know what keyboard you are using.

Yes, Compuapps ATAPI 741 seems to be a good choice, and not too expensive, it is only $50 or something like that.

You will need a 40 pin IDE cable, and will have to extend the MPC internal floppy power cable somehow.

I found it didn't work with a couple of 40 pin/80 wire IDE cables that I bought, and ended up buying the ribbon cable and connectors, and making my own up. I think, from memory, that they need to be about 9 inches minimum, I think I made mine 10 inches.

Works on OS 1.14 and 1.20.

Ah , no , i will leave the "internal sound engine " on , cos thats what i want to hear , i tried it and its sweet , perfect timing now . I can play notes into the mpc at 80 bpm , and then speed it up . Makes me sound like i can actually play the keyboard properly like a pianist !
I have heard that there are keyboards that have 16 timbres , or layers , or sounds that are all midi connectable to the mpc , i think the access virus and the korg x50 do this . Also it has two sets of midi ins and outs on the mpc , so thats 32 instruments it can control ! aswell as the 4 banks of 16pads ! and i got 8 outs so i can tweak the sounds outboard if the limited effects board doesn't do the job . ( im thinking compression , a producer told me to always add compression on drums ) .
This MPC2000XL is immense , i am still learning stuff it can do , and i have had it for about 6 years !

If i do turn the "internal sound engine" off , but still use the keyboard into the mpc , then i won't hear anything at all ? or will i ? i thought midi is just data ? no sound . ?
Im lost now , surely if i turn the sound on the keyboard down or off , then the mpc will not be playing or triggering any sounds at all ?

It depends.

Since you have a closed circuit with the MIDI connection in both ways (keyboard to MPC AND MPC to keyboard) the soundengine of the keyboard gets triggert twice with
the same notes and at the same time:

1st trigger comes from your playing on the keyboard
2nd trigger comes from the MIDI data that run thru the closed circuit over the MPC

This causes doubled notes and phased sound as long as you actually play the keyboard.

The solution is this:
Either on your keyboard or on the MPC you need to cut this closed circuit. This can be done with a setting.

1st method
There is probably a setting on your keyboard called LOCAL OFF. That means that the direct connetion between the keys and the soundengine is cut BUT the keys still sends the notes over the MIDI OUT. You will play the keys and the MIDI data runs thru the MPC back to your keyboard and trigger the soundengine.

2nd method:
If your keyboards doesn't have the LOCAL OFF setting you can still avoid the double notes by disableing the MIDI OUT to work as THRU.
The default setting of the MIDI OUT on the MPC is to also work as MIDI THRU.
With this setting all MIDI data that comes into the MIDI IN will not just reach the MPC sequencer but also will be send directly to the MIDI OUT of the MPC.

If you disable the MIDI THRU, all MIDI data that comes in will only be recorded in the sequencer. No data will be send directly to the MIDI OUT.
BUT. When you play back the sequencer with the recorded MIDI data it sure will send the data to the MIDI OUT.

Place the cursor on the Maiin Screen of the MPC to the MIDI channel and hit OPEN WINDOW. There is the setting called: Soft thru

@ PETERPIPER ,

NICE ONE !
Keep picking those pickled peppers !
Thats great info , i hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out .
I will do method 2 as i also use the keyboard seperately . Does the mpc store the setting ? or do i have to do it every time ?
