Midi and all that ish is secondary man. Concentrate on makin the music and all that other ish will come in time. If u get too technical too soon your doomed. I did just mess with the mpc at first; familiarized myself with all the screens/buttons, then loading samples into it; creating sequences/ loading saving sounds; creating pgms and aps files; then I looked at the midi ports on the back of it.
Same with the triton; got familiar with the main screen, buttons, onboard rubbish sounds; I had to sample into it; there was no time slice when I bought it but nonetheless I familiarized myself with it. Then I looked on the back of it too and handshaked the mpc and the triton; read the triton manual bout using the triton as a controller/master and slave/sound module. The same with the mpc 2000xl. The rest was all accidental and just came by poking around and making mistakes/ calling akai/korg putting two and two together. That's all I want to know as far as midi; I don't know what sysex is or using MTC or smpte. As long as the mpc is the sequencer or cubase or the triton that's all i need. I use all sparingly; when I do larger projects it's cubase with the midex 8 in between to control up to 8 midi devices. When It's Hip Hop demo session; I'll use the mpc sequencer. For dance/trance/club tracks it's either/or triton/mpc/ or cubase. Just depends on the flavor.
If you have the dough drop it and stick to the basics. Worry about midi after you begin mastering your gear, after that happens bother your salespeople (who made the nice commission off of you) bother the manufacturer of your gear (tech support/product specialist) If they want your repeated business and referral; they'll be happy to help.
