About the sound of the MPC.

I've used allot of samplers and the MPC is the closest thing to the original sample that my devices get. My other samplers tend to give the sounds a cloned feel. While the MPC playback is about 100 % of what I hear in my editors. (Perhaps due to the velocity being so solid)

I Eq and master all of my sounds prior to loading them in my samplers.

I do hear a significant difference between 32Khz on my ES-1 and 44.1Khz on my MPC though. I load the same sounds (different sample rates) into both samplers for the ghosting and adding presence to the drums.

again with the sound? man what you put in you get out, I agree. to say that an sp1200 has a crunchy sound to it MEANS
when I dont care to eq or spend time blending notes into one sample, and just go raw the sp1200 sounds great.

ok fine, but if you spend the time to MAKE the sounds sound like an sp1200 nobody will be the wiser. I sampled all my kits thru my boys sp1200 that I borrowed so i can have a "sp1200" kit that has all my drums but off of an sp1200, then I load them in the mpc and skip the "eq and setup my sounds to sound like an sp1200" thats all it does, the producers who cop the sp1200 and other gear like that (thr 808/909 comes to mind) are paying for the ease of not having to do that.

man, if you LOOK AT THE BLOCK DESIGN OF THE MPC 2000/60/3000 they are almost the exact same. I refuse to believe that the unit has some magic elf inside the mpc 60/3000 that Roger Linn hired to make his soulds sound "fatter" out of them.
the reason the artists use MPC 60/3000's IS NOT FOR THE SOUND, THEY CAN GET THAT ANYWHERE. THE SEQUENCERS ON THE MPC 60/3000 CAN HANDLE more stuff then the 2KXL's can, I wanna say like 100,000 more notes.

the 60 definately has a 'sound'to it. the sequencer is probably no different to the rest, or not much different.

my 2000xl holds 300,000 notes and the 3000 holds 100,000 while the 60 holds even less........the reason why people grab the 3000 over the 2000 is the midi outs.....it has 4 midi out that means that it can control 64 midi tracks....nothing more nothing less...in every other sense the 2000xl got them beat....well not the 60 because the 12 bit sound is standard...but then again the 2000xl is better because not too many ppl want 12 bit sound all the way around....they just want mostly the drums to sound dirty....the 2000xl reads wave files while no other mpc can do that beside the new 4000.....of course to make your 2000xl exceed the others is by expanding everything...but in the end 2000xl got it(the 2000xl only has 2 midi outs though)

The MPC60 does have its own sound because it is 12 bit not 16 bit like the other MPCs - it's as simple as that. As far as features go, the MPC60 has nothing to offer compared to a 2000xl. The 2000xl has a far superior sequencer and sampler.

i have had a sp1200 yes it is very good just for drums. worth the cash if u can afford it. but i have to say the 4000 is at the head of the pack. the options make it so u can get super ill drums. u just gotta know how to werk it. auto normalize , resample and add effects. i can confuse heads with this machine

my bad on the notes thing, I said I may be wrong though

but yeah 12 bit sound will sound different then a 16 bit sound,
the mpc 60 is a 40khz sampler as opposed to the 44.1 of the 2000 series, basically that means the 60 takes less "slices" of the analog sound when it converts it to digital, creating a sound less true to the original, but grunges them up enough to make them sound phat.

ok, this can EASILY be replicated with a PC and an MPC 2000. EASILY. all you gotta do is (gasp) resample the sample at 40 khz or even 33 something to get the grunge of ther mpc 60.

in short, the MPC 2000's sampler is more advanced, so you can also work backwards and make it sound "less advacned" with some work.

The 4000 is extremely overpriced you can get a dope PC and a MD and have money left over. What exactly is so great about the MPC 4000 That a PC does not do?

By brainwashcloth Thu Apr 24, 2003 7:11 pm
people will say you need software and it is more expensive to go the pc+mpc route, but get a good pc, some good software and a mpd16 controller and you are set. money left over to a decent midi keys controller too. they might say a 4000 is more portable than a computer setup, but a laptop is more portable (and battery operatable) than a 4000. really the only thing might be 4000 is more stable, but with a real os (XP pro) and i nice clean computer and the right drivers and everything you are probably as well off as the 4000 users who are beta testing akai'a os versions for them. anyone that got a 2000 or XL right when they came out knows what im talkin about there.

all akai gear is overpriced, just like all vestax mixers were until the clones started coming out. basic economics, the price is what the market will bear. people will pay 3 grand for a mpc 4000 so why not sell it for that?

c'mon, the mPC2000 has prolly 200 bucks in parts in it, and if one was so inclined it could be built by an EECS geek for less then 500 bucks.
