hey guys,

Just to check this out a little further, i wanted to see what someone would have to do to fit a sampler 8 out board in an MPC2000XL. I compared the two boards and there are some differences in the boards. If it does work electrically it could turn into quite a mod.
The ribbon cables are different and there is no ferrite bead on the cable, so you would have to replace that. TheS2000 board is a little different shape (shorter and wider) You would need to saw some off of the side to allow the board to fit in place next to your SMPTE I/O jacks. At that point it will fit against the back panel and all the bolt holes will line up on the back panel to hold it in place but then the board is too short to reach the standoffs. I guess you could attach some sort of plate to the board to reach the standoffs (which hold the board up off of the mother board) It doesn't look impossible, but it will take some work. If anyones interested I'll see if I can post some pics to detail this.

Phew :D
Thanks rhythm-x

I thought as much! I'll make a new bracket for the 8 in/out. As for nik mentioning me blowing-up the machine, it was actually a power surge ( not THAT big a co-incidence in this part of the world) that blew the power supply fuse. It might seem easier to buy an MPC board but it cost me a s**tload to buy this thing (currency not too hot vs $ or pound ) so you kinda have to make do wit what you got..

to answer Kilowax's question: In Durban on the east coast...

Thanks Guys!!

AJ,

Great to know that you didn't blow the fuse installing the board. As long as the board works electrically, putting a sampler board in your XL seems like it could be easy. Mod the bracket and replace the flat grey ribbon cable with a longer one that has the ferrite bead (anyone know where to get the cable w/a ferrite bead)

Has anyone aleady done a step by step with pictures, I didn't see one on Midicase and couldn' find the info using the search. Don't want to waste time if the detaails have already been posted, but I think I figured a way to make this simple.

Howdy Nik

...Errr... what's a ferrit bead?
Excuse my ignorance..

[quote="nikenn"]IMHO the fact that "the 8 output board is a bit loose "when I plug a cable in it, the board goes a bit into the MPC " could (not saying it will) but could run into problems in the future. If it ain't tight it ain't right.
quote]

Well man, the loose thing is not on the connections (flat cable). It's the fact that even screws doesn't get the 8 output board as tight as the proper metal board. So I personnaly think I won't have any problems in the future because the flat cable I have installed is longer than needed so even if the 8 output board isn't that tight, it won't disconnect or cause any problems...
But don't get me wrong man, I understand what you're saying.
I have to say that if I wasn't a computer tech, I probably woudn't have try to do this trick. But I'm quite at ease with hardware and a MPC is nothing else than a computer

There is a ferrite bead (I guess its made out of iron, ferrite) wrapped around on the cable that connects the IBM208P (the card recommend for the MPC). Its not on the sampler 8 out board. I believe it was added to reduce the possibillty of interference from the power supply or because the 2kXL 8 outs is so close to the bottom panel. someone else may be able to explain this better, but I think you should have that on the cable. I just started posting on this forum, so as soon as I figure out how to post pics I'll post some that show the differences.

Someone also posted the Mutec instructions for installing the 8 outs and I remember reading a blurb there about the ferrite bead in those as well, you may want to get those instructions as a reference.

I have refined my search and found a LOT of info on installing the 8 outs from the samplers into the MPC2kXL. There are severel different methods but no one has mentioned whether or not they replaced the bead when they replaced the ribbon cable.

Rhythm X, can you give us a few details on what you used for the cable.

I just checked thru the Mutec instructions again and they didn't see anything about the ferrite bead, maybe it was the IB M208P info that has it.
Anybody that has the Mutec card, is the ferrite bead on the cable they supplied? For some reason, the guys in Japan felt it should be there.

Hi nikenn.

About the ferrite bead, I have to admit I don't have any idea what you're talking about...
When you'll be able, please post a pic

As for the flat cable, I've use a standard IDE cable.
I've done alot of tests and there's no flaw at all !!!

I think my only concern (ferrite bead aside..) is where the ribbon cable joins on the 8 i/o board itself. The ohter end is a standard IDE fitting but where the cable joins the board, it looks as though it is fixed. I must admit I'm not sure about his but I don't want to pry it too much incase I break it. Is it in fact soldered on the board? Like rhythm-x I am not too concerened about the fit as I'll leave the cables attached. I just need to figure out how to lengthen the ribbon cable.. rhythm-x... the secret..?

Still not too sure about that ferrite bead Nikenn... is that where the cable joins the 8 i/o board?
Sorry... just want to make sure :?

It looks like the ribbon cable is fixed (soldered to the board). It would be cool if there was some sort of male to female "extension" cable to use.

The ferrite core is a small bead looking thing that wraps around the ribbon cable and is zip tyed to the metal mount of the IB-M208P There is a drawing in the MPC2000XL manual (in the back section under installing the IB-M208P) that shows the placement of the ferrite core (they call it a core, not a bead). Honestly, I don't know what it does or if you really need it, but I can't imagine AKAI paying for the core and paying someone to put it on each card if it's not neccesary, but stranger things have happened in the world of AKAI. I'm sure you should be able to get one at an electronics store somewhere if you really need it.

AJCT, check your PMs, i got some questions for ya.
