But sampling the snare or the break straight from another beat is nothing but lazy, uninnovative, and weak!

"With no hands, I chopped these drums off 'Truly Yours', G. Rap" confesses Doom on "Go With the Flow" and sure enough, you can hear G. Rap on the intro and throughout.

doom must be lazy, uninnovative and weak then. uhhh, ok man, sure.

look man, biting is NEVER ok.

you just CAN't take someone else's recipe and call it your own.

however...if you use the ingredients of his recipy, add your own ingredients and make an totally new recipy, what's the **** problem?

I sample from EVERYTHING even stuff purists would turn their head for and frankly I don't give a flying ****.

as if ANYONE can tell the seperate drums in my layered drums?
I take care in making original drumsounds.

by the way : quest love, jay dilla and 9th wonder etc are known for sampling drums from hiphop beats...

it's just what you do with it that makes it original use of samples or biting....
don't copy paste a dre kick. that's wrong and people will be able to tell that's a dre kick.

instead : sample it, fade it out, resample it, pitch it, EQ it, layer it with 8 other kicks, compress it, balance it out with your other kicks to create your own kick. make sure you can't tell what the individual drums are anymore...

that's wussup.
who cares where you get your shit from as long as it's bangin...

if you're any good at drums you would know that you can't just take a dre kick and a timbaland snare and make a beat with them cos it will sound incosistent and...well...it would suck probably....

put work in it....

Thank You! Thank You! Anyone who calls themself a fan of Doom ought to know "I chopped these drums off Truly Yours, G Rap"
Enough said.

First of all, I love Doom's stuff, he's by far my favourite artist at the moment!

Secondly,
What Doom does in some songs is he takes old-school rap beats (just the drums), and uses them as a foundation for the track and builds the track around it. It's kind of his trademark. But as you can see he does it in a way that is very obvious and you can always hear where they are from. In this case he even says the name of the song he sampled.. But he doesn't do this to jack the beats, no. It's his way of paying tribute to the heads that came before him, and he makes it clear!

Most of the sounds used in those old beats are just normal drum machine sounds that everybody has access to. Doom sampling them is NOT the same thing as you sampling his record for single drum hits that he has spent time digging, sounds that you would probably never find yourself! Because some of the kicks and snares he has are just bananas!! Peep "Who do you think I am" from Operation: Doomsday to see what I mean! There is this clean kick - snare - kick - kick - snare pattern in the beginning of the song that just punches you in the gut!

As he says in "Con Carne" "I dedicate this mix to Subroc, the hiphop Hendrix". He took the drums from Just-Ice's "Latoya", and the main sample is the long break in Sade's "Is it a crime", so it is like as if he was at a club spinning records, just mixing a couple of records together. I know this sounds like a stupid thing to say, but Doom is probably the most old-school artist around these days!

There!
