So....If I want to use 8 gb CF card at it's fully capacity I could use only external scsi card readers?(internal atapi card reders won't do that work?)

Just copped the drive suggested on the first page of this topic, but wondered if anyone could tell me exactly what cables I'll need to buy ahead of time? I figure i'll need a 40pin ide cable but wasnt too sure about the other wire. Cheers.

JVC wrote:So, I finally have the CF reader (Addonics ADIDECFB) delivered. I took photos while I was installing CF reader.

First, I made two holes on the bracket (I took out the eject button part, as it was already half broken):

plugged in IDE connector (from old PC) and power extension code that came with the CF reader:

The first two holes and the mounting parts from XL did not match! So drilled the 3rd hole:

It fits fine now:

I plugged in the CF reader:

CF reader is now mounted. cables are tied:

This is how the XL look with the CF reader:

I used Sandisk 2GB Compact Flash card. I formatted the card on XL. It works fine!
It seems that XL actually recognizes as a 2GB card. I was expecting XL to see it as 1GB card.

For testing purpose, I copied WAV sound library from PC (Mac OS X makes hidden files on each folders, which XL doesn't like much...) They show up on XL:

Done and dusted, the Addonics ADIDECFB works perfect, followed this to make sure i was doing things right. thanks for pics.

Hi y'all!

Where can I buy the Addonics ADIDECFB in Europe?

Cause on the Addonics website, they ask more for shipping than the item...

Thanks!

Thanks a lot! Did you order one or something else at this shop?

If anyone has one in France, otherwise I'll think I'll go with that one.

no i got mine from Digital Era' a different reader for £11.34 including shipping (very cheap) but i don't think they stock them anymore.

i was just shopping around to see if i could get a better deal for you, it was the cheapest one i could find.
im all about helping fellow MPC users :) .

Thank god I found this thread cause I was about to drop 150 on a reader from mpc stuff.

I just recently got a mpc 2000xl and it doesnt have a scsi zip reader or any floppys.

How do I check what OS I'm on, and on mpc stuff it says the parts they sell come with a OS installed? Do I have to install the OS too if I buy one for cheap like stated earlier in this thread?

If I do have to install how would I do it since I don't have floppys or zips. Thanks

If you got nothing to save on there's no point in makin any beats untill you do,
to find out what os you got installed press shift+8 then press ver. it will tell you what os you are running.

BUT GET SOMETHING TO SAVE ON BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY BEATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my opinion is to save yourself the trouble and get the one from mpcstuff. its not a bad price for how useful it is. you can probably find them on ebay to but the thing you are paying for at mpcstuff is reputation and a guarantee it will work.
lonnie wrote:and im running on os 1.07, how do i update?

check the link at the top of this forum, 'mpc os and manuals', download a new os, save it to floppy disk, and boot with the floppy in.
lonnie wrote:btw i can't make any beats because theres no sounds on the mpc at all.

an mpc is a vintage sampler. you have to put sounds into it. if you dont know what a sampler is or how they work, either get ready for a bumpy ride (bumpy but rewarding) or try to get something more modern that has sounds preloaded.
lonnie wrote:i cant even hear a metronome.

the metronome generally only plays while it is in record / overdub mode. you can change this but that's how it is by default.

id recommend searching the forums or starting a new thread for all your questions unless it directly relates to 'recommended card readers'.

welcome to the forums

alright thanks, it looks like im going to get the one from mpc stuff. like i said though theyre charging extra to install on OS, should i pay for that or can i do it myself?

alright thanks im going to check that thread now

I know what an mpc is, i just said theres no sounds on it because he said not to make beats till i can save. obviously i have to put my own sounds in or else i wouldnt be asking about a card reader

the last thing about the metronome, ive had it in record and i still dont hear it and i also set it too sound off during regular play but i still dont hear it anyways thanks for the response

Yes you can but you need something to load it.

Hi everyone, I am having some trouble with installing a CF and would like your opinions.

I just got the ADIDECF adapter (although it seems to have different jumpers than JVC's adapter pictured above). I have 2gb, 1gb and 512mb Sandisk cards that have been mentioned in this thread - although they were formatted on the pc. I am running OS version 1.14.

My questions to you are:

WHY DOESNT IT WORK? no just kidding...my real questions are

Do I need OS 1.2? I have 1.14 and none of the cards are showing up.

The CF Reader won't show up if the mpc is booted without a card?

Do I need some special jumper configuration on the CF reader from Addonics? It's got a DMA jumper, LED plug, master/slave, and something else (reset or something) I admit I tried them all.

Is there a recommended way to format the CF card on the pc or do I try any random CF card that i find until it works on my OS.. Even if it's the same model and brand?

My problem gets deeper... As I don't have the original floppy anymore (have been using internal SCSI but it can't handle vibration very dependently) I used an old samsung floppy from the pc - but it just won't read any disks (that work in the pc). It has a light on and spins like a limp wristed baby sitter. I plugged everything in quite well and some configuration of the cable will cause the floppy not to be found at all. It is also weird that i can flip the cable on both the motherboard and floppy, and the effect is the same - just spinning. Maybe this model of floppy isn't supported... In anycase this is why I can't upgrade OS at the moment and am dicking around with the CF on os 1.14.
