1GB is the most the MPC will format and use. You can use a larger card but anything over 1GB will be ignored.

I figure this is a good question for this thread.:
How does one know if an IDE drive/MPC allows hotswapping? If it does not allow it, but you try it any way, will it ruin the card, drive or MPC?
It appears some drives might be hot swappable if used in a computer but no so if installed on an MPC.

If the card reader drive is IDE (like the one MPCStuff is selling), you won't be able to hotswap the card. If you try it, the MPC will freeze up and crash. You won't damage anything doing it but you would lose whatever you had in memory at the time.
If the card reader drive is ATAPI (like the one the VST sells but is currently on backorder), you can hotswap the card.
With the SCSI card reader drives we sell, you can hotswap the cards. Also, you can have two CF cards inserted and active at once, each looking like a separate drive to the sampler. Plus only the SCSI drives work with sampler models other than the MPC2000XL.

I have an ATAPI card reader. What does hot swapping allow you to do? Transfer from card to card?

It means you can take a card out and insert a different card while the sampler is powered on. In case the card you are working on doesn't have enough free space left or you want to put the project on a different card.

One thing I was never able to confirm is use of the SD slot. Does only the CF slot work with the MPC?

I've heard of people having problems using SD cards - we don't recommend using them with our SCSI card reader drives. CF cards are the most reliable and not much more expensive than SD.
You might have no problem with an SD card but you'd just have to try one to be sure.

One more question. I have the internal ATAPI card reader. What is the easiest method of copying all of my beats to abother card at once (for back up)? Last time I tried this, I copied them to the computer, but all the file names that were longer than 8 characters were brought down to 8 characters. If I connect two external card readers to my computer, can I just drag and drop the files from card to card without the computer touching the file names?

You could using Translator Free (http://www.chickensys.com) but you can't just using Windows.
