It allows you to break up the sample into even parts. Also lets you choose how many parts. Hence you can chop up a four bar loop into 16 peices and litterly play back the sequence in order on your pads. Once again hence the playing chops backwards, and or out of order and so forth. There are a few other little things to be aware of when using zone feature. You want to make sure you have an exact loop and know the bpm or ruff tempo of your loops/sounds. Its pretty simple and the manual explains well. There are many forms of chopping as im sure your aware. Its whatever works, I personally notice when i spend a decent amount of time setting up my samples/drums/instruments ect, the final product is much more.

Yep, all those videos on youtube show stuff but don't explain it.
Your explanation and reasoning is what's missing from 90% of all the videos out there doing that, props.
