1GB CF card problems

I guess I might get scolded for starting another CF thread, but I did search and spent a good hour combing through threads. Alas, to no avail.

I've been using a 512 MB Sandisk CF card with my 2kxl thus far without a single problem. The card got full, however, and I decided to upgrade to a 1GB kingston CF card. I copied the contents of the old CF card to the 1GB one. Here's where the problems start. The card might work fine for a period, but sometimes when I try to load/ save a certain file, the MPC either freezes while the screen says "Waiting..." (ejecting the CF card solves this)-- or, I get a plain "disk read error" when trying to save something. I formatted my CF card (FAT) just to be sure, but I ran into the same problems immediately after the new format. Is there anything else I can try or should I give up on the CF card? That said, are there specific CF card (brands&sizes) that should work with my 2kxl? I saw a list-type thing in one thread, but those were for the MPC1000?

(I wish I could tell you the brand of my CF reader, but it's been too long since I bought it).

What OS do you have on your MPC?

Any card should work but I personally stay away from the cheap/no-name/unheard-of brand of CF cards.

My bad for not mentioning it: I'm running 1.14.

In other words, there's no way I can make the 1GB work on my 1.14? If I upgrade to 1.20, the 1GB should work? I seem to recall that I might run into some problems if I upgrade to 1.20?? Again, I tried searching, but I'm not so clever with the search words...

1.20 does not let you partition, so disks above 1 gig will only show 1 gig storage space. I have a 1gig cf card working fine under OS 1.14 2gig SD card as well.

Hmm. I decided to bite the bullet and just upgrade. When I first got my MPC (many, many moons ago), I never even dreamed of having 1 GB of space, so I'm not really worried about not getting more than that. As far as the other purported problems associated with the upgrade go, we'll see...

The OS version apparently had nothing to do with it. The first file I tried to save: "disk read error". The CF card is brand new, so all I can think of is that it's a compatability issue?

Let me ask a final question..

As I said, I copied the contents of my old CF card to my computer (filenames all 8 characters or less), and then the 500 mbs worth of stuff to the new CF card (the one with the problems). Loading the old stuff works just fine. However, the moment I try change/edit the existing contents of the card I get into problems. I.e. saving into a pre-existing folder. Even creating a new folder within a folder that was already there results in a "disk read error". Creating a new folder into the root, though, and saving files there poses no problem!

I ordered a new CF card so it's not so much a question of getting to use this specific card as it is figuring out the problem-- so any insight you might have I'll be glad to consider.

I updated from 1.14 to 1.20 over the course of this thread-- it made no difference.
Filesystem... FAT, I formatted the card both in my PC and (after upgrading to 1.20) my MPC.

did you check the connection inside your mpc? If you travel with your mpc like me sometimes things get shaken up in there and you have to make sure everything is connected tight. not sure if this will help but worked for me when I got messages like that.

Stinktank, I have the same exact problem but I have 3 1 Gig PNY cards that I was using for samples and I also had some current beats as well as beats I was transferring from my zip drive. OS 1.20 and the cards are 1 1/2 years old. I get the errors when saving or loading beats, exploring folders, navigating sounds, loading programs, and .APS files. Formatting them isn't working, neither is MPC Editor's Disk Write Protection. I've had the errors since last summer. I have the blue AKAI MPC 2000 XL MCD.

Me, 114os, 512mb Lexar, no problems for 3+ years.

os 1.14, 512MB and 1GB CF and 2GD SD with no problems whatsoever.
