Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

so last night i was workin on a beat and i was doin it for like 5 hours. wasnt even done yet but i had my skeleton and it was lookin nice. i didnt save yet because i dont have no space on my memory card so i would have to delete a beat to save a new one so i wanted to make sure it was good enuff to save. so anyway im workin along and all of a sudden it goes to that one screen with all the number and letters and you can hit memory or watever. tried every single button to try to get out of it.

i just remade the beat this morning but itll never be what it was because almost all of my percussion i did without timing and now it doesnt have the same feel. not to mention my chops arent exactly the same so itll never sound the same as it originally did. FUK. sorry just venting

Exactly! I learned that after the same thing happened to me. About 3 hours in I was chopping away, pressing a bunch of buttons at the same time and the MPC just looked up at me and said "fam are you serious right now? Its been 3 hours...how about a f*cking break"....Then it froze :(

Yeah, you definitely have to save pretty often with the XL. The 3000 never ever froze on me, but it's well known that these (and other) things happens with the XLs.

It's might even be smart to save after chopping and turning the machine on and off to clear the RAM. Some of the times the XL freezes it plays all the sounds in memory, and I have noticed that samples you have deleted hours ago still is in RAM, and may cause problems. I don't know if that's a fact, but I like the idea of the MPC being as clean as possible, so that nothing may mess it all up.

my 2k would freeze on the daily, so i got into a habit of saving isht(samples & sequences) everytime...what a ****...

My XL has never frozen but had it's odd moments
Last night though it got close to freezing, it just hanged on a screen but this was due to a button beeing stuck down so no matter what you pressed it would do nothing lol

The most **** up thing I've had was with my zipdrive.. A long time no problem and suddenly the zipdrive gave a disc error.. I tought bad luck, but since then 50% of my beats gave an error :(

I've opened the MPC and saw that the power supply for the zipdrive wasn't made that nice (probably after upgrating from the floppy drive).. So my dad made everything smooth.. After that time it was a little bit better (but it's an IDE drive, strange enough).. I've got an other one.. so I can replace it soon..

But this is the reason I'd ordered an external hd on ebay specially for the mpc 2000xl (of 9 gigs)..

I just had this same problem. I made a beat that had difficult samples to flip. The machine garbled and ate it while I was still unsure about the beat. If your like me and you don't save EVERYTHING, just wha
t you decide your feeling, my new technique is to have a disk to save on constantly as a "scratch disk".

Yeah man I was in song mode my 2000xl froze also like that other guy said my machine showed me all of that memory screen once it sucks getting a flash card any one want a least 10 zips mad floppies and a zip drive hit me up! Alanta Lithonia Ga!

i too have learned the hard way... many a fine beat lost. some i was able to kind of remake, some escaped into other dimensions.

I feel your pain bro(s).

now i always have blank zips handy. on the positive, i've been more organized.

Because of this 2000 uses a Switching PSU

It will sometimes just freeze or power skip

1. Linear. Linear supplies are simple to implement but are inefficient as far as power transfer, and usually get warm or hot in normal operation. They are usually only about 50% efficient. This means that if your equipment requires 45 watts of power, there is about 45 watts of heat given off. They are environmentally "quiet", economical and easy to build and troubleshoot, and they use heavy and bulky steel plates, and copper coils in the power transformer. These types of power supplies have been around since the beginning.

2. Switching. Also referred to as an SMPS (switch mode power supply). They have been around for a much shorter time, with hitting the main stream electronics about 1990. They are very efficient sometimes reaching 85% or more. They run much cooler because of this. They are light weight because they do not use a power/isolation transformer. They are environmentally noisier because they actually switch power at frequencies between 60 and 300 kilohertz. Proper design must be implemented to keep noise out of the equipment and isolate the mains from your equipment.

In both types of supplies there are filter capacitors. These capacitors are like small storage devices like batteries that remove any voltage ripple components from the mains AC or the switching frequency. These capacitors have a varying useful life from 5 years to 15 years. Over that period they can and will deteriorate (change capacity value) and loose their ability to hold a charge. The effective values can change as much as 80% and make a piece of equipment almost useless with strange and illogical behavior. The extent of the behavior will be determined by the designers ability to "over design" the power supply to accommodate the continuously degrading values.

What does this mean to users of ANY type of electronic equipment? If you detect abnormal operation of your equipment, always suspect the power supply first. It is the one part of any piece of equipment that has to work the hardest.
