Heres a little MIDI question 4 yall

OK. Yesterday in a pro tools class that I'm taking, I attempted to midi up a Proteus2000(sound module) to my MPC2000, I was trying to get it to where I could control the sounds with the MPC and sequence them on a TRACK in the MPC. Unfortunatelly I failed to do so and I looked like a straight up dumba**.

The green light would blink on the Proteus indicating that it was getting a midi signal from the MPC. The only problem was, I was not getting any audio response into the MPC. Heres how the way I had them connected:

I had the MIDI OUT of the MPC to the MIDI IN of the Proteus. The MIDI OUT of the Proteus to the MIDI IN of the MPC. And last, I had the MAIN OUTS of the Proteus to the Input of the MPC.

When I went to Sample Mode, I would hear the audio, but when I just wanted to record on a track, I wouldn't hear anything. Someone PLEASE help a brotha out.(Remember, I have an MPC2000, If that helps). Thanks Yall

well, the sample screen is for sampling from an audio source like turntable, cd player, minidisk, etc....if you want to sample something you gotta use the record in's.

But for what you want to do, it sounds like you connected it right. now, on mpc, you have to go to where it says DRUM:OFF. Change drum to MIDI and change off to the MIDI channel your working on with the proteus (Example: MIDI:1a, MIDI:2a, MIDI:3a, MIDI:4a, etc..). Then hold the record button and press play start and that should be it.

Now for every track you use a MIDI instrument on, you gotta change DRUM:OFF to MIDI:x

x being the midi channel your working on with the MIDI instrument.

You have to have BOTH the MPC and Proteus going into a mixer or a soundcard to hear both the MPC and Proteus. If you're just sequencing the Proteus then you only need to hook up the Proteus to the mixer or soundcard. Unfortunately you can't monitor from the MPC inputs unless you're in sample mode(which Smoove03 explained).
