MPC to trigger drums from my computer sequencer?

Hey guys!

I'm currently using an MPC 1000, but I'm probably switching to a 2000 or a 2000xl.

Couldn't find an answer to these questions anywhere else.


1. Can I use my MPC to trigger drums from my computer sequencer (reason/logic)?

2. If so, can I do that while using the MPC to record and control other MIDI tracks from reason/logic?

3. My soundcard doesn't deal with MIDI. What kind of MIDI-USB interface do I need in order to be able to both receive and send MIDI with my MPC.

Question 1 : Yes, Just set the MIDI channels right in your DAW/Program and MPC.
MIDI gives you 16 Channels, which means you can control 16 different instruments.

Question 2 : Im not really following. You can record the MIDI Data into the MPC if you use the MPC as the Contoller. I dunno if you can control MIDI tracks that are in Logic from the MPC or record MIDI Data. Im not too deep into MIDI yet, but im pretty sure one can import MIDI Data into the MPC.
Hopefully someone else knows more.

Any MIDI to USB Interface will do.
Anything from Edirol, Tascam, M-Audio, Yamaha, MOTU (just be careful w/ MOTU products)

IMO, Get a USB or Firewire audio interface w/ MIDI I/O. It will benefit you in the long run.
Same manufacturers as the others w/ addittions of Focusrite, Lexicon, Alesis, Presonus, Echo.

For Logic, you need something like Battery, Dunno if Logic has its own drum module VST.

Use the search function or search the net or youtube.

By the way, why are you switching to a MPC 2000XL from a 1000.

If its because this little issue, you are just wasting money.

You kind of misunderstood my some of the questions, guess I could've been more clear..

What I meant was:

1. Can I assign pads on my MPC to certain drums in my computer sequencer, like a straight MIDI controller? In order to record loops to the MPC (or to the computer sequencer), using computer sequencer drums samples, hitting the pads of the MPC.

2. Scratch the 2nd question! I think I figured it out..

What is I/O ? How will it benefit my in the long run?

I bought a used MPC 1000 a month or two ago. I'm probably selling it for the same price I bought it. So no, I'm not really wasting any money. I'm saving a lot of it because the 2000 is a lot cheaper.

Plus, I found that it was a major pain cutting samples in the MPC, so I won't need that extra RAM of the 1000. I'll just cut samples in the computer, import them to 2000 or trigger them on my keyboard.

What I really like about the MPC is the sequencer, with song mode and tracks. And the feeling of the drumpads. So I think I'll just use it for sequencing, drums and maybe triggering samples.

Plus, I like the classic look of the 2000/2000xl a lot better than the 1000!

I/O is just a lazy quick way of typing Inputs/Outputs.

its an all-in-one in a way.
You have your Analog I/O, MIDI ports, use it to track out from your MPC, hook up your monitors to it, all your equipment connected to one unit, but a dedicated MIDI interface will give you more MIDI options and more MIDI I/O to use if you need them.
It was in my opinion only, if you want a dedicated MIDI interface, go right ahead.

Im still not understanding the first question....
Maybe its just me and its not getting through my thick skull.

You would still have to use MIDI, let me check out a few things and let me get back to you.

Say one track on your comp sequencer has your drums.......right?

Is it an audio file or a plug in( i.e. VST, etc...)?

If its a plug in, Set it to whatever MIDI Channel you want (Channel 1, 2, 3. Whatever)

Then on the MPC set it to MIDI, Than choose the same channel you chose for the track on your DAW/ computer sequencer.

As for just triggering a straight audio file, im not sure.

Like I said im not fully understanding what you are asking.

A MIDI controller is what it is, a controller that sends out midi messages.
If its by USB, its the same thing but only using one cord to send and receive the midi messages.
