you do know that floppies dont affect the sound in any way (for example, how cassette tape does) ... there is not a single advantage to using floppies.

floppies have regular disk errors... they are very common.. and it WILL happen to you eventually. not only is zip faster, it holds more and there is rarely any disk errors.


sticking with 3.5 floppies to be oldschool is completely pointless... you gain nothing.

you can dump a single wav say 1mb onto the floppy and load it into mpc, then write over that same floppy another 1mb wav and load that into the mpc once your done loading up the mpc, you can save sounds as snd. same sound that you had in 1mb wav will be a little less (800kb or so) as an snd file. zips are great though and you can find a drive on craigslist for $10. i found one at a rummage for $2 with a disc in it. the problem is finding the scsi 25 pin to 50 adapter. that will run you about $12 new from a computer store. i'm having issues running a firewire to scsi adapter to my mac. i'm running 10.5 so i don't have classic. i'm looking for a straight up usb zip drive hoping that will work, anyone know if it will.

MO drive + MO disks is the way to go (if you dont want a CF Cardreader). MO disks are much more secure than zip disks.
If you really want to use floppy disks then you should know about the "speed up trick" or use the resample feature in the XL or sample everything in mono.

if you are transferring wav files from the comp to MP, a cf reader is NECESSARY!!

Or if you HAVE to use floppies, just play the wav file on the computer and sample it into the MP and Save as .snd...

I recommend checking out SMC for a cf reader though.....Dudes porduct is nice and your supporting a forum member, so you know your money is well spent. Also, he will run you through installing it if you run into any snags....
If your technically inclined and dont mind taking the time to look, you can still find hot swappable cf readers for cheap, youll just have to find a way to mount them into the MPC....

word... I somehow doubt my cf card is hot swappable... but i payed under $2.50 for the thing including shipping. the card was like 7 bucks. odd.

^^^Word. Just search the forums a little harder and you can pull up 100's of threads on storage options...

IMO, The xl with card reader and 8 outs blows all the other MPC models out of the water, hands down. The build quality is there, and the 1 filter on the xl ishts all over the 1000's 4 filters. The only thing missing in the xl is sampling while playback....

yeah i agree.. i wish it had that type of resampling. also the other thing i would like to have is an alternate way of track muting... like lets say we hold shift and push a pad to turn it back on that it would de-mute the pad right there and then instead of only playing at the beginning of the next midi note. that would be nice. but I like the xl. it works well, there are almost no bugs and almost no complaints.

That always worked for me before I got a zip drive. Sample everything in mono sped up and then pitch it down to the right pitch. Really though just get the scsi cardreader if you have a 2k classic, but if you have an xl get smc's cardreader. Cheaper in the long run. 1gb card vs 1.44mb floppy...hmmm :lol:

I never used the sped up trick to save memory, I just sampled one shots and small loops, and never had any kind of issue w/floppies. I used the floppy drive for 6 years...I still have never used the scsi port either....

Upgraded to the cf reader a few months ago, and it was well worth it. I took a few days to build up a drum library of 64 sounds and saved it as a program, now ALL my cf cards have the same drum program on em, I have a few nice sounds from some sample banks on em too, and TONS of room for samples/sequences. The funny thing is the cards are only 64 MB, I got 8 of em on clearance for $1.99/pc. Radio shack had a sale on USB CF Readers, $8.99

8x 64mb=512 mb....512mb/1.44mb=355.5 Floppies

For 10 floppies @ Wal Mart=$5.99

For the amount of memory I get from those over the floppies plus the usb cf reader, I saved over $190...That pays for 3 cf readers from smc, or 30 cf readers (Board only) on bay...

If you have the 2000, go Zip drive, or contact scsiforsamplers.....Hes MAD EXPENSIVE, but you get the best products...

nah bro, using floppies gives it that dope floppy sound. I don't know how to describe it but it's like that hard hitting soulful feeling that only floppy gives. floppy for life. ask any audio engineer and he'll deny it though because it's not actually true

I have never tried jaz drives though... I never even saw a jazz disk in person, and I only know they exist because of the iomega website.

anyone mess with those? Some people seem to get them into the mpcs.
