I have received my replacement note variation slider today and hope to get it all up and running again, however I'm a bit concerned I might screw it up. I understand that many of you have fixed this yourself and with great success, and would be thankful if any of you could upload some pictures showing a step-by-step guide of installation.
All the best

I had to do this recently. It wasn't that big of a deal. Idea is to be extremely careful and give yourself some time. If you're not comfortable with soldering, go to youtube, search "electronics soldering" maybe even "desoldering." Maybe then practice on some junk electronic component.
Check out this guys vids...
http://www.youtube.com/user/viperfrank. He takes apart a SL1210 like it's no thing. Shows you shouldn't be afraid to tear into your gear. It saves you major money. I called a few places and they were like $140 bucks for the first hour or something insane. Anyway, about desoldering I will say I tried desoldering braid for the first time when I replaced my slider and it worked like a charm! A LOT EASIER than a solder sucker thing.
About taking apart the MPC...know that to take off the board with the slider, you'll have to loosen the main board (from underneath the unit) to be able to thread thru a wire, from the slider board, and putting that **** back thru, cause I didn't remove the main board all the way, was the biggest hassle I had.
Good luck.
